About us
ICMM's vision is a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals. Each of our company members – which together account for one-third of the global mining and metals industry – commits to implementing our Mining Principles as a condition of membership. These principles are neither static nor do they represent the ceiling of our ambition. We are always challenging ourselves to go ever further in setting the highest of standards for responsible mining, and delivery. We promise to work collaboratively with associations and other stakeholders to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development. Our commitment to working with others does not stop at our industry’s boundaries. We were founded on a spirit of open engagement, and we continue to champion diversity of opinions today to deliver bold leadership for our wider industry and non-resources sectors alike.

Renewable energy technologies like wind turbines and batteries are essential for a just transition and require huge volumes of critical minerals and metals to make them. When it comes to critical minerals, the ends – important as they are – do not justify any and all means. Producing them responsibly requires mining with principles. Departing Brazil 🇧🇷 after a 10 day visit to mines, R&D centers and engineering offices at Vale I am blown away by the scale and success of this company’s technical transformation in circular mining and sustainability 🪨♻️. Everywhere I traveled, thanks to the generosity of Bruno Pelli and Francisco Manesco, I witnessed firsthand how learning from history has catalyzed innovation for impact. A few examples: 🟢 #Waste2Value. At Serra Norte, the world’s largest iron ore mine, the Gelado Project is harvesting 5Mt/yr of high-grade (63%) iron ore from tailings using fully electric 🔌🔋 pumps and dredges. The program at large is on track to produce >34Mt iron ore by 2030, 10% of current total output, as well as 3.8 million pre-molded concrete products 🧱⚙️ and fertilizers 🌱. Special thank you to Debora Amato Lourenco Rossi for your thoughtfulness and stimulating ideas exchange on geology and Bebeto (Carlos Campos) for sharing your knowledge and extensive operational experience🙏 🟢 #SafetyAutomation. Across all assets in Minas Gerais and the Northern system, Vale continuously monitors waste structures with advanced remote 🖥️🛰️ and in-situ warning systems 🦺📐. What’s more, a safety-first blasting induced vibration initiative has led to 10% YOY increase in yield 📈👏 Davi Leandro Flávio Sergio Marcus and a fleet of 24 autonomous trucks and 18 drill rigs are now fully operational with more to come 🚜 🟢 #Conservation. In Pará, Vale preserves ca. 1Mha of forest, an enormous contiguous area in the Amazon near where #COP30 will be hosted 🦜🌳 Beyond grateful for this hands-on learning experience and the many brilliant, enthusiastic colleagues Felipe Augusto Martins Alexandre Andrade who made this visit special. Special shoutout to Bruno Farah Maciel, Yuri Ramos (MIT) and ICMM for your support of this partnership from the start; none of this would be possible without you 🫡 #Colaboração, #integração e #mineração 🇺🇸🤝🇧🇷

#COP16: In our final COP16 session at IFC - International Finance Corporation’s event in the Blue Zone on Wednesday, ICMM’s Haajarah Ahmed was interviewed by Yamide Dagnet of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), before she interviewed Jennifer Black from the World Benchmarking Alliance. The conversations touched on the increased focus from the mining and metals industry to support a nature positive future while ensuring that the process to get there is grounded in respect for Indigenous Peoples' rights. Another theme that resonated during the conversations was Jenni’s point on the importance of tension in collaboration to be able to get to the root of challenges and drive progress towards solutions.

Responsibly sourced metals and minerals are essential to creating the sustainable cities the global population needs. With almost half of humanity living in cities, UN SDG11 calls for adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services, and the upgrading of slums, effective urban transport systems, and reduced environmental impact of cities. On #WorldCitiesDay, find out how mining can contribute to safe, modern cities with a reduced environmental impact: https://lnkd.in/e_Asu_KX

#COP16: Yesterday, our Co-COO Aidan Davy shared a panel with renowned Colombian ecologist Brigitte Baptiste, Alicia Lozano Vila from Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt and Pierre Gratton from the Mining Association of Canada. A highlight was an overview of the findings from Brigitte’s research into the protection of biocorridors in #Colombia – which showed significant positive outcomes for biodiversity on some formal mining concessions. The need for companies to observe strong commitments on biodiversity was a recurring theme, with all participants encouraged to provide their input to the public consultation currently underway on the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative. Replace me with a cat, hold meetings in pubs, and give everyone free waffles. These are the responses I’d expect to see in our consultation on the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative if we opened it to the British Public like the government has done on the National Health Service 🤣 British people can’t be trusted with a public consultation, but I know YOU can! So please, make sure you have your say to define the future of responsible mining - consultation is open till 16th December. And if enough people did suggest replacing me with a cat or holding meetings in a pub - well then that’s what we’d have to do. Meow!
Public consultation is now open!

#COP16: Thanks so much to yesterday’s panellists Libby Sandbrook, Kate Wallace and Elvis Acheampong MSc., LLB., PMP at our Blue Zone event - as well as our highly engaged audience. The session, moderated by Aidan Davy, explored the tension between increasing production of critical minerals and achieving nature goals such as No Net Loss or Net Gain of biodiversity. The panellists highlighted the most important levers from their perspective to halt and reverse biodiversity declines. We also discussed how to effectively collaborate on mitigating impacts, and on opportunities to enhance biodiversity including through the conservation and restoration of nature within areas of operation and wider landscapes. Practical examples of partnership challenges and how to overcome these were shared. Ultimately, leadership and increased ambition across the sector will be critical in addressing the nature crisis.
