About us

ICMM's vision is a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals. Each of our company members – which together account for one-third of the global mining and metals industry – commits to implementing our Mining Principles as a condition of membership. These principles are neither static nor do they represent the ceiling of our ambition. We are always challenging ourselves to go ever further in setting the highest of standards for responsible mining, and delivery. We promise to work collaboratively with associations and other stakeholders to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development. Our commitment to working with others does not stop at our industry’s boundaries. We were founded on a spirit of open engagement, and we continue to champion diversity of opinions today to deliver bold leadership for our wider industry and non-resources sectors alike.

Earlier this month we caught up with Anna Krutikov, our Head of Sustainability, at the ICMM Responsible Mining Leadership Forum. She reflects on the chance to connect with other businesses from across the industry and the opportunities for collaboration with stakeholders from across the mining value chain as we work to responsibly source the commodities that advance everyday life. “The Consolidated Standard combines the leading practices, insights and lessons learnt over the last two decades of ICMM’s work with that of three other leading and widely used voluntary standards. The result is a comprehensive and practical blueprint for responsible mining that can drive continuous improvement at scale for the benefit of all stakeholders.” Aidan Davy, Co-COO of ICMM. ICMM is proud to support the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative vision for a less complex standards landscape that benefits all stakeholders, sets a high bar for responsible mining and drives continuous improvement across the wider mining industry. The CMSI public consultation is open until 16 December 2024. We encourage all interested stakeholders to provide feedback on the draft Standard and multi-stakeholder oversight system. You can submit your feedback and learn more about the CMSI here: https://lnkd.in/ewRp-D8P

📢 Exciting News! The first public consultation for the consolidated mining standard is now open! We invite all interested stakeholders to participate and share your views on the draft standard, governance model, assurance process, reporting and claims policy through our online consultation portal. Your feedback is imperative in helping to shape a standard and oversight system that serves the needs of stakeholders, sets a high bar for responsible mining and drives continuous improvement of environmental, social and governance practices throughout the value chain of individual metals and minerals. The first public consultation will last 60 days, ending on 16 December 2024 and is available in 8 languages. https://lnkd.in/ewRp-D8P ICMM Mining Association of Canada The Copper Mark World Gold Council

Most things needed for a sustainable future – wind turbines, solar panels, electric vehicles – are metal intensive. Reaching net zero by 2050 will require an estimated 3 billion tons of metals to support the clean energy transition, requiring an estimated 300 mines to be built. To meet demand while staying on track with the world’s sustainable development goals, we need to embrace circularity—focusing on both the production and use of metals. Minerals and metals are used as base materials in products, technologies and infrastructure across almost every sector. By strengthening approaches to reducing emissions, tailings and other waste; optimising water usage; regenerating closed mine sites; valorising and recycling other waste such as tyres; and focussing on efficiency, the sustainability of materials entering value chains can be improved. Collaboration to promote the responsible use and recovery of responsibly produced metals after they enter markets can help to ultimately enable circular economies. Discover how ICMM members are enhancing their circularity to sustainably and responsibly meet the growing demand for metals: https://lnkd.in/gtaQ5KdY #CircularEconomy

#Naturepositive is a global goal to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030, compared to a 2020 baseline, and to achieve full ecosystem recovery by 2050. It’s about regenerating the planet's biodiversity, protecting ecosystems and enabling a sustainable future for all 🌱 Earlier this week, the Global Nature Positive Summit, co-hosted by the Australian Government and Government of New South Wales (NSW Government), brought together leaders from government, corporate sectors, research institutions, environmental organisations, and Indigenous Peoples to accelerate collective action driving investment in nature and exploring ways to safeguard our planet. Alongside Dr Doug Hilton (CSIRO) and Kobad Bhavnagri (BloomergNEF), ICMM’s Environment Director, Emma Gagen discussed the role of science in driving nature-positive solutions for businesses and industries noting that cross-sector collaboration will be essential to accelerate progress on amplified nature action through the value chain.

Change begins with us. On #MentalHealthDay, it is important to consider our responsibility to improve the experience of workers in our industry. In June 2023, we updated our Mining Principles – which are member commitments - to elevate the importance of psychological safety alongside that of physical health and safety. Population growth, social progress and clean energy technologies are increasing demand for minerals and metals. At COP28, a landmark commitment was made by nearly 120 nations to triple the world’s installed renewable energy generation capacity by 2030. However, even with the predicted future increase in recycling to help bridge the supply gap, it is estimated that more than 300 new mines may still be needed to meet the demand created by the energy transition. Increasing the circularity of mining and metals value chains will help us to sustainably and responsibly meet the growing demand for metals. ICMM’s new Tools for Circularity will help mining and metals companies minimise waste and maximise value throughout every stage of the life cycle, from sourcing, to production, to use and recovery. 🌍"With privilege & opportunity comes responsibility" Today, Rohitesh Dhawan, President & CEO of ICMM, was at the Financial Times Energy Transition India Summit offering insights on how the mining industry can transform its responsibility to decarbonise into its greatest opportunity by: - Committing to the goal of net-zero by 2050 which provides the North Star for the decarbonisation journey for mining companies - Launching initiatives to reduce diesel associated emissions whilst improving safety such as ICMM’s ICSV initiative that could make zero emission vehicles available at scale by 2030 - Using 100% renewable energy, to make mines the catalytic force for the growth of renewables for the entire regions and countries while reducing costs and improving operational reliability - Working to decarbonise the full value chain also known as Scope 3 emissions - Consolidating standards to simplify the current fragmented landscape Read more: https://lnkd.in/ejVMQPzS #EnergyTransition #Decarbonisation
