Key explorations for me at the European Evaluation Society (EES) Conference in Rimini were about evaluating #systems not programmes. Interesting workshops by Martin Reynolds and Barbara Schmidt-Abbey on Systemic evaluation as Collaborative Praxis - applying relational/perspectives and adaptive thinking and updating my application of #softsystems approaches. Also Dr Anne Stephens, Ellen D. Lewis, PhD and Jill Thomas on Responding to wicked problems with systemic evaluation, including a great case study around equitable community-based justice system in Colombia, and a fun role play. The International Evaluation Academy (IEAc) also wishes to explore system science in evaluation and Beverly Parsons and Cristina Magro will be leading work in this regard and collaborations are to be welcomed. Decolonising National Evaluation Systems: A New Approach Ian Goldman, Dr Candice Morkel, Edoé Djimitri Agbodjan, PhD and Thokozile Molaiwa explore how National Evaluation Systems (NES) in South Africa and Benin can be decolonized using a social-ecological model in a new article for the African Evaluation Journal: https://lnkd.in/eZYzZdMh This thought-provoking piece proposes five key strategies for strengthening NESs: 1) Break from Bureaucracy: Move beyond traditional, bureaucratic models. 2) Systems Thinking: Embrace a holistic, systems-based approach. 3) Learning Focus: Leverage the strong learning cultures in both countries. 4) Participatory Democracy & Coproduction: Empower non-state actors, especially citizens, in shaping NESs. 5) Power Dynamics: Shift power dynamics within NESs and evaluations. This is a crucial conversation for building more equitable and effective evaluation systems.
