Previous to our post about stocking the new Petzl AVAO harnesses, let's get into the specifics. Starting at the top, the shoulders (obviously not applicable to the sit versions but these changes are also on the ‘Top’ harness if you use one). The lanyard parking points are gone BUT they’re still available as an accessory if you want them. The shoulder strap webbing is slightly narrower which means narrower pads and narrower buckles giving a lighter, lower profile shoulder section. The spacing of the straps at the rear D-ring is also wider giving more clearance around the neck. Probably the biggest change, and one that you wouldn’t notice without trying on the harness, is that the shoulder straps now slide through the front D-ring, so if you pull up on one strap the other strap will move down. This makes it more comfortable when you lean from one side to the other and helps when taking the harness on or off. The New Petzl Avao harnesses are now available. The attachment points and certification remain the same but lots of other details are different. The pads have changed from the previous mesh version, there’s a bit less yellow and the lanyard parking points have gone (from the EU version at least) but what other differences are there? Well, quite a few if you look closely. Let’s take a look. Back to foam pads, profiled to allow them to bend in the right directions. The buckles have a new feature that helps prevent creep (loosening as you wear it). The fit has changed – lower profile in places, more clearance in others. Combined with the updated pads this should make the harness feel very different to wear.
