More than ever, we need a focus on global employability In an ideal world, tertiary education would be free for all students, with well-funded higher education institutions conducting ground-breaking research to improve our world. Unfortunately, this vision remains elusive as governments of all kinds are increasingly reluctant to provide adequate funding for higher education, prioritizing early years and K-12 education, healthcare and job creation instead. Are overseas branch campuses reproducing class privilege? British overseas branch campuses (OBCs) are the most exclusive form of British transnational higher education (TNE). Universities not in favour of dual-use research Universities and academic institutions have largely rejected a European Commission proposal to allow dual use research projects in FP10, the successor programme to Horizon Europe due to start in 2028. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Brussels and national capitals worry whether the EU could defend itself if directly attacked by Moscow, and want to step up defence R&D in response. The environmental emergency is real. HE is our best hope Humanity is on the brink of a huge precipice. As if old problems such as violence, wars, hunger, poverty, among others, were not enough, we are facing new crises aggravated by globalization and new technologies, such as pandemics and serious information disorders, which are mixed with an appreciable increase in autocracies and political polarizations around the world. To complete this complex picture, environmental changes – climate change, the catastrophic loss of biodiversity and environmental pollution – are becoming increasingly obvious to everyone, unfortunately confirming something that scientists have been warning about for years. Top universities seek clarity on international student caps The latest indicative figures suggest Australia’s top ranking universities are set to lose a significant share of international students under the government’s proposed scheme to introduce caps for individual universities in a bid to overhaul the national higher education system. Leading institutions such as the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne, for example, will each have their enrolment limits for international students in 2025 reduced by 7% – to 11,900 and 9,300 international students respectively.
