Our Damp and Mould team were out on Andover Estate tackling a case of damp and mould. They were hard at work removing mould and applying chemicals and paint to prevent future build up to keep our homes healthy this winter.

One of our Diagnostic Surveyors Mark Carr was out last week on Hilldrop Estate responding to a report of damp and mould in one of our council homes. Mark checked every room, window and cupboard throughout the property as well as the exterior of the building and left no stone unturned to get to the root cause of mould in the resident’s home. Check out what Mark had to say about how seriously we take every case of damp and mould in our council homes.

Cllr Diarmaid Ward has become the Acting Leader of Islington Council, following the resignation of Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz. Earlier this month Cllr Comer-Schwartz, who had been Leader since May 2021, announced she would be stepping down. Cllr Comer-Schwartz’s appointment as London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime was formally confirmed at a London Assembly Policing and Crime Committee hearing on Wednesday (23 October). First elected as a councillor for Holloway ward in 2014, Cllr Ward has been on the council’s Executive since 2016 – serving first as Executive Member for Housing and Development, before becoming Deputy Leader and Executive Member of Finance, Planning, and Performance in 2022. Before joining the Executive, Cllr Ward worked as legal aid solicitor and was a member of the Duty Solicitor Scheme at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court. As well as stepping down as Leader, Kaya Comer-Schwartz has resigned as a councillor for Junction ward. A by-election will now take place in the ward on Thursday, 28 November.

Last week our community safety team, police officers, the Mayor of Islington and councillors visited groups all over the borough for National Hate Crime Awareness Week. We spoke to over 400 people at 14 different events explaining what a hate crime is and the different ways they can be reported. But the work doesn’t stop there. We work all year round to tackle hate crime in Islington and you can get involved. Support your community by volunteering as a Hate Crime Prevention Champion, email HateCrime@islington.gov.uk. 17-24-30 National Hate Crime Awareness Week (1184819) #NationalHCAW Bashir Ibrahim Jason Jackson

We're taking action to tackle damp and mould this winter. Our teams are out treating damp and mould, upgrading boilers, fixing leaks, clearing gutters, replacing windows, giving advice and much more to restore people’s homes so they are damp and mould free in time for the festive period. We're also sharing practical information and advice with residents, so they can manage condensation, damp and mould at home and get help when they need it. Check out our newly revamped condensation, damp and mould webpage in the comment below to see what we’re doing in the borough 👇
