Recently, the Save Windermere Campaigners undertook investigations and revealed that concentrations of blue green algae in England’s largest lake exceed WHO guidance for recreational water activity. With the ongoing issues in water quality and blue-green algae detection in Lake Windermere, ISS Flowthrough would like to highlight that high-quality aeration systems are an effective method for improving water quality and reducing harmful algae growth. The mixing of lakes prevents favourable conditions for algal growth by increasing diffused oxygen concentration, disrupting stagnant waters, and limiting their light source. Our aeration systems have been implemented in large deep-water bodies worldwide. Pictured below is Nieuwe Meer near Amsterdam where ISS Flowthrough designed and installed an aeration and mixing system to ameliorate Microcystis and Blue-green algae blooms. The team at ISS Flowthrough recently travelled to the #GrandUnionCanal in Southall, London to perform routine maintenance on one of our #bubblebarrier systems at the Adelaide Dock. These algae flourish in the summer months when temperatures are warmer and there is plenty of sunlight. There are several negative effects that result from development of depleted dissolved oxygen concentrations in fisheries. One negative effect is that fish are unable to use the deeper areas of the waterbody during the summer months. This excludes a large area of the available habitat. Angling performance can be impacted as fish can only be caught in the shallower areas or near the surface. At the end of April, our ISS Flowthrough team travelled to Holland to install one of our aeration systems! Installed in the eastern section of Nieuwe Meer to mix the full depth of the lake to assist in the amelioration of potential harmful Microcystis blooms and surface scums. The system does not present any interference to recreational or commercial activities on the lake and is robust, adaptable, with a low ongoing maintenance requirement. #waterquality #cleanwater #bluegreenalgae #lakes #wateraeration

A recent article from ABC News expresses concerns over the continued fish kill issue in Darling River. An investigation conducted by the NSW Department of Primary Industries concluded that “poor water quality over recent years, elevated temperatures over summer and the ongoing impacts of recent mass fish death events are contributing to broader impacts on the health of golden perch in the Menindee weir pool, making them susceptible to a range of diseases and parasites." ISS Flowthrough aeration systems can help with this issue. We installed a system to tackle similar issues of low dissolved oxygen levels in Cardiff Bay. The purpose of our system was to aid mixing and reduce the potential for dissolved oxygen concentrations falling below the required levels.
