Ethylene control intelligently reimagined

About us

We're a UK-based Agri-Food Tech company solving the fresh produce ethylene problem … in a much more sustainable way. Based in Staffordshire, we're commercializing innovative solutions for the post-harvest and retail sectors. Addressing the impacts of ethylene in a fundamentally new way, our products can extend all the way to consumers’ homes. While there are many factors affecting the quality and shelf-life of fresh produce—things like agronomy best practice, harvesting approaches and post-harvest conditions on temperature, humidity, microbial controls, and time in transit—the management of the plant hormone ethylene is perhaps the most crucial. Without ethylene management, the extensive efforts on those other factors is effectively wasted; with it, and the produce is protected, reducing its stress and extending its life. Unlike other solutions, the It’s Fresh technology does not interfere with the natural pathways, or cover the produce with coatings. Instead, it manages and adsorbs ethylene, allowing the produce to develop naturally, albeit at a slower rate. This means produce protected with It’s Fresh simply tastes and smells better. We have now launched our second-generation technology (Active) with up to 10x the efficacy of our first generation. With ethylene-control products that are both customisable and seamlessly integrable, we support better returns for growers and retailers, and ultimately better eating outcomes for consumers, reducing waste across the supply chain at the same time.

Head over to our RYPEN Technology YouTube channel for Episode 4 of Talking Fruit. This episode has been released early - providing a great introduction for upcoming episodes as well as some interesting teasers. In this and all episodes we're trying to connect the dots and share insights from across the global fresh produce supply chain, from the farmer right through to the consumer.   This time Jon Barfoot and Graham Ellis are taking a closer look at #avocados. Global production was nearly 9 million metric tonnes in 2022 (UN FAO, 2022). Learn how avocados became so popular, where avocados are grown, and the techniques farmers and exporters have used to grow, expand and ship this fruit around the world. Jon Barfoot will also share and demonstrate why certain techniques compromise the final eating quality of avocados, resulting in a rock-hard fruit which never truly softens. Learn how you can identify the best tasting, ready-to-eat avocados in-store, leading to beautiful guacamole, rather than inedible disappointment.   Catch the episode below, and stay tuned for more insights into the fascinating world of the global fresh produce industry! 🌎 And if there's a particular fruit you'd like us to profile next, let us know which one and why. #freshproduce #supplychain #fruitindustry #sustainability #RYPEN #Itsfresh #talkingfruit https://lnkd.in/ekS9hbfj

Head over to our RYPEN Technology YouTube channel for Episode 2 of Talking Fruit, the new source for interesting facts about the fruit we all love to buy and eat.🍇 🥝 🍒 This time we're taking a closer look at #TableGrapes, one of the world's favourite fruits, and one which is grown and shipped in huge volumes all around the world.🚢     We dropped by our local Tesco Extra to buy punnets of all the grapes they had on the shelf, then our resident expert Jon Barfoot got to work - ably guided by Graham Ellis - discussing where the grapes had been grown, the differences across price points, and what shapes our consumer experiences when buying and eating grapes. 🛒     And of course, there's a discussion on our RYPEN Technology and its potential to transform the global supply chain for grapes (and other fruits too).   Catch the episode below, and stay tuned for more insights into the fascinating world of the global fresh produce industry! 🌎 And if there's a particular fruit you'd like us to profile next, let us know which one and why. We'll give shoutouts to those who share interesting fruit facts we can use too. #FreshProduce #SupermarketQuality #GlobalProduce #FruitIndustry #Sustainability #Tesco #Waitrose #Sainsburys #RYPEN #ItsFresh #TalkingFruit https://lnkd.in/dJazj-Dy

Jorge Luis García van Gein and Pablo Guzman are both at Expoalimentaria Trade Show in Peru this week, meeting with growers and exporters to discuss how we can help them maintain better produce condition for longer, and reduce losses during storage and shipping. #Peru is a major global exporter of many fresh produce items, particularly #TableGrapes and #Blueberries, two crops that benefit from ethylene management post-harvest. At It's Fresh!, we've shown that grapes do in fact emit small amounts of ethylene - managing it helps keep the rachis greener for longer, and reduces berry shatter. While with blueberries, taking away the ethylene - particularly during storage - helps maintain crunch and reduce shrivel. We have several products relevant for both cultivars (and many more), all of which manage ethylene without compromise, ensuring the eating experience for the consumer is the best it can be too. If you're at Expoalimentaria and would like to meet up, get in contact!

In Europe, most produce coming via sea freight arrives at the Port of Rotterdam, the largest seaport in Europe and one of the largest in the world. Our Technical Services team are regularly there, supporting our customers in evaluating the impact of our RYPEN Technology on their fresh produce shipments. With a focus on designing the right level of ethylene management needed – and which RYPEN products should be used to deliver the best outcome – Justin Creasy and Michael Williams love nothing more than poring all over pallets in chilled arrival halls, assessing fruit condition! Our RYPEN Technology has been specifically developed to capture and moderate ethylene levels in packaging throughout the supply chain, helping growers, packers and retailers deliver better quality fresh produce, while minimizing food losses and waste. It does this too without the shortcomings of legacy ethylene control products. If you’d like to learn more about how our Technical Services team can support the integration of RYPEN Tech into your fresh produce supply chain operations, please get in contact. #Agriculture #FreshProduce #FoodWaste

Our Technical Services team was busy in the Port of Rotterdam throughout May and June - overseeing the arrivals of produce from around the world, protected with the RYPEN Technology. Areas like Southern Africa and Latin America are vitally important to Europe, growing produce to support year-round supply. This produce typically arrives on boats, having spent 30-45 days (or even more) in transit. Managing ethylene during those extended journeys is critical to ensuring the produce arrives in a saleable condition - with growers and exporters paid based on arrival condition, any delays can have significant financial impacts. At It’s Fresh, we have extensive experience in protecting produce during transit, and we help our customers ensure they have the right level of ethylene protection to give them confidence across the supply chain. If you’d like help implementing next generation ethylene control in your fresh produce operations, get in contact. #Agriculture #FreshProduce #logistics

#Tenderstem® Broccoli (TSB) is an increasingly popular vegetable, with volumes in the UK alone exceeding 100m packs sold annually. During the Northern Hemisphere’s winter, most of the crop eaten in the UK/Europe comes from Kenya where the long, warm days and cool nights deliver ideal growing conditions. As summer approaches, production then progressively moves further north through Spain and then into France, Switzerland, Germany, UK and beyond. This all presents significant challenges to TSB. As a flower, it is sensitive to ethylene, with the stresses related to heat, transit times and handling all potential sources of ethylene spikes. This can rapidly lead to deterioration in condition – wilting, yellowing, early onset of flowering and sulphurous smells - resulting in consumer rejection and increase in waste. Work conducted by It's Fresh! has clearly demonstrated that managing ethylene post-harvest can have a significant and positive impact, keeping more of this valuable crop within specification and therefore available for sale. With the RYPEN Technology, we’ve created both storage-, and retail-, focused packaging solutions that hold condition, extend life and reduce waste. With both solutions now commercially available, if you’re involved in the TSB supply chain, contact us for more details on how we can support your business. #Agriculture #SupplyChain
