October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and people worldwide have been raising awareness and supporting those affected.
Unfortunately, #womeninmining face increased risk factors for breast cancer. Prolonged exposure to carcinogens, such as chemicals and substances used in mining operations, raises the likelihood of developing cancer. Additionally, night shift work, which disrupts sleep patterns and exposes workers to artificial light at night, can interfere with hormone regulation, further increasing breast cancer risks. Compounding these challenges is the limited access to healthcare services and screenings, particularly in remote mining locations, which can delay early detection and treatment.
Inclusive workplace design is key to supporting breast cancer survivors and promoting awareness. By understanding the impact of breast cancer, organisations can implement policies that minimise exposure to carcinogens, provide properly fitting PPE, and offer flexible work arrangements and ergonomic workstations. Additionally, providing access to support groups, counselling services, and comprehensive healthcare tailored to survivors’ needs helps create a more supportive and inclusive environment.
