This isn't the place for a novel, but that's what it would take to capture the International Barley Genetics Symposium experience. Words like 'community' and maybe 'family' come to mind but in the end it all comes down to the science behind barley. There may have been some tango, steak and malbec involved. I was delighted to see how much research is happening around non-malting uses for barley. Fortification and boosting β-glucans, protein (19%) and even the impact of milling on bioavailability. Great discussion around the challenges facing hybrid barley, impact of temperature and rainfall on pre-harvest sprouting, the logic behind increasing plant density vs tillering and some very interesting idea around forage barley. Most importantly for the International Barley Hub, business model ideas from Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes and Boortmalt for breeding a Scottish malting barley. Really too many conversations to mention. My decompression back in Buenos Aires involved meeting the fantastic teams at ZoomAgri and APOLO Biotech. Lots of follow-up in my near future. If you feel like you missed out... keep a lookout for the International Barley Genetics Symposium returning to Scotland after 40+ years. 😜
