📢 Yesterday, the House of Lords held a debate on the case for an industrial strategy. During this debate a number of members echoed Make UK’s and #UKmfg’s calls for the Government to put one in place. Since 2010, we have had 11 growth strategies, 9 business secretaries and 7 chancellors, alongside a plethora of announcements, initiatives and institutions. This has contributed to a lack of a proper, planned industrial strategy – which we believe is the UK’s Achilles heel. During the debate, members raised the following points: 🏭 An Industrial strategy is needed to be competitive with other countries. 🌎 An Industrial strategy is key for a green economy and to create green jobs. 🏗️ The consistent axing of an industrial strategy over the past 14 years has led to instability in our industrial sectors Many members also referenced the recent news from the UK Steel sector to demonstrate why it is imperative that the Government implements a comprehensive industrial strategy – and we agree. It is time for the Government to propose and implement a long-term, modern, robust, industrial strategy, to help British manufacturers reach their potential and continue to compete on a global scale. #SupportUKmfg #IndustrialStrategy UK Steel

This week's show covers an interview with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt. I was delighted to hear him talk of much needed reform in business taxes to help facilitate growth in the UK, including business rates and employer's national insurance, both of which are punitive to small businesses trying to grow and are not linked to profitability. Make UK, which represents #manufacturers, said its member firms strongly support permanent full expensing. Not only would the UK's attractiveness as a place to invest slump if the policy were to expire after three years, the argument goes, but also businesses operate on an investment cycle, and many would miss out if the incentive came to an end.
