A productive discussion yesterday afternoon in the House of Commons to discuss The Future Governance Forum (FGF)'s new report into making a devolved employment system work. Thank you to all those who joined AKG and FGF in Parliament. It was fascinating to hear from a range of employment support experts, MPs, providers and civil servants on the challenges of combatting economic inactivity and boosting local growth across all regions. 📄 Read FGF's report for more on how a localised, holistic approach to employment support will help individuals facing the most complex challenges find meaningful employment. https://lnkd.in/e2KmjDjz Here are the key recommendations: ✅ A new localised model of support, with Mayors and Combined Authorities given long-term funding and commissioning powers. Multi-year spending settlements are critical to ensure regional governments and service providers have the stable funding they need to succeed to deliver effective services. 🤝 New local labour market partnerships to strengthen relationships between central government, local commissioning authorities and local providers. 💪 A focus on localised delivery through stronger relationships. A place-based approach is critical to tailoring support to local economies' specific needs, boosting local economic growth and tackling the specific complex needs of individuals. 📄 Updated DWP guidelines to raise standards, ensure consistency, and deliver a high quality of services. With a complex tapestry of services, national government must play a central role in setting a strong framework that guarantees high quality support is available in all parts of the country. 🖥 A new role for the DWP focused on oversight and data analysis to enable sharing of consistent data, monitoring performance at a national level and evaluation of programmes to promote sharing of best practices to improve outcomes for individuals in all regions. 🏥 Better integration across health, housing, and employment services to address local job market needs, drawing on the learnings from schemes in Greater Manchester and London. With over 3 million sidelined by long-term illness and 30% of young people out of work and education due to mental health issues, access to holistic support is more important than ever.
