We are thrilled to announce the recent publication of the paper titled "From Rebound to Reinforcement Effects—The Role of Analyzing Underlying Mechanisms for Accounting" by Stefan Schaltegger, Clara Amend, and Sebastian Wüst from Centre for Sustainability Management (CSM), Leuphana Universität Lüneburg in Journal of Sustainable Finance & Accounting. Abstract: Rebound effects can reduce planned environmental savings considerably if they are not known, accounted for and managed. Environmental activities only contribute effectively to reducing environmental impacts if rebound effects that diminish the intended improvements remain small. Research has so far focused on macroeconomic analyses and shows that rebound effects can be highly relevant on the level of industries and economies. While widespread agreement exists that rebound effects are an important phenomenon that needs to be better understood when managing environmental protection activities, little is however known about mechanisms that explicate the emergence of rebounds in companies and what consequences can be drawn for accounting and management to prevent or reduce them at the corporate level. To address this gap, this paper problematizes the underlying assumption of an automatic and almost inevitable formation of rebounds by investigating how rebound effects emerge from mechanisms, including decisions and actions within companies. Our conceptual analysis contributes to accounting research and practice by asking how rebound effects could be considered, prevented, or even transformed into outcomes that increase the intended environmental improvement, i.e. reinforcement effects. The study shows that rebound and reinforcement effects are not inevitable but that their emergence is subject to accounting and management decisions. We are excited to announce the recent publication of the paper titled "Greening finance and green financing need environmental metrics. The opportunities offered by natural capital accounts " by Alessandra La Notte from Natural Capital Accounting, in Journal of Sustainable Finance & Accounting. Abstract: Nature underpins human well-being and the global economy, and its degradation affects production processes and all the value chains that depend on them. Although this link between nature, economy and finance is recognised, it is still not clear how it works. Among the major initiatives taking place around the world, the UN System for Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting (SEEA) provides the perfect framework for linking a rich set of environmental information with economic accounts in a consistent and coherent way. The Integrated system for Natural Capital Accounting (INCA) project has tested and implemented SEEA in Europe. The paper uses the results of INCA to illustrate some concrete examples of how ecosystem service accounts can support (i) greening finance, to inform and improve the management of economic exposures to nature-related risks, and (ii) green financing, to raise funds to address environmental issues. This is a first but critical step towards bridging nature and economy by integrating scientific knowledge on ecosystems and their services into financial routines. We are pleased to announce that the insightful paper titled "Social Business, Accountability, and Social Impact" by Xianrui Zeng (Sheri Zeng) from Presbyterian Support Northern, and Chris Van Staden from Auckland University of Technology has been recently pubblished online in Journal of Sustainable Finance & Accounting. Abstract: The social business concept is receiving increased attention as social businesses could solve some of the social problems that we currently encounter in society, for example, hunger, poverty, unemployment, etc. Social businesses pursue a social mission through self-financed business models, rather than relying on philanthropy to survive. They should be accountable for both financial and social performance (activities) to multiple stakeholders who have different demands and interests We explore how social businesses should discharge their accountability in terms of financial accountability, accountability for their social impacts, and their social and environmental accountability. Since there is no common accountability framework for the measurement and disclosure of social impact, this research aims to construct and suggest an accountability framework for social businesses. To achieve this aim, we systematically review the literature on accountability, blended value and social business, and develop a framework for the accountability of social business. Our findings suggest that accountability for social business is underpinned by the blended value creation perspective. Social businesses require an extended form of accountability framework, including accountability for legal accounting obligations, accountability for performance, and accountability for programs. Social businesses should also discharge their accountability through reporting, dialogue, engagement, and actions. Through this extended accountability, social businesses become more transparent and accountable.
