About us
We are academic publishers and broadcasters of research into the health and environmental benefits of Biophilic Design. Listen to our PODCAST or read our JOURNAL, we interview thought leaders on many different aspects from urban planning to home design, architects to acousticians. We also offer a networked consultancy service, advising on the benefits of Biophilic Design connecting you with the expertise you need. From time immemorial we have been connected to the earth, to the land, to the wind, the rain, the sun, nourishing ourselves from the abundance of fruits and seeds around us, listening to the leaves rustle, watching the birds fly in formation above our heads as they head for different climes, feel the ice cold water in the rivers, or enjoy the grass beneath our feet as we sit and talk around a fire. As a species, the human race NEEDS a connection to nature. But we spend most of our lives inside and many of us operate in cities or towns, there’s concrete, asphalt, cars, cacophonies, hardly any parks or trees, birds are minimal and life is, well, running on empty. The distance from where our inherent biological connection to the world and ourselves is currently, is a thousand miles away from where it needs to be in many instances. So this is where Biophilic Design comes in. Biophilia is the “love of life, living things”, plants, animals, insects, us, air, flowers, sounds, textures…. In interior design this is often represented directly, for instance by bringing plants in, encouraging natural light and fresh air or by its virtual representation or mimicking of nature, so printed views, using colours from nature, soundscaping or improving acoustics. In urban planning, this is about incorporating trees, parks, wildlife corridors, biodiversity, encouraging engagement with nature and communities through pathways and so on.

Can Biophilic Design help fix our Climate Emergency? In the urgent battle against climate change, an unexpected hero is emerging: biophilic design. Far more than a trendy architectural concept, it represents a radical reimagining of how we interact with our built environment. We speak with Tom Dolan, a senior research fellow at UCL and leading voice in sustainable infrastructure. "We're not just adding plants to buildings," Tom explains. "We're talking about a complete transformation of how we design our cities, infrastructure, and living spaces." This approach goes beyond mere aesthetics, offering a comprehensive solution to some of our most pressing environmental challenges. At its core, biophilic design recognizes that humans are intrinsically connected to natural systems. It's an approach that sees buildings and urban spaces not as isolated structures, but as living, breathing ecosystems that can actively contribute to environmental healing. This isn't just environmental idealism. There's a compelling economic argument too. Drawing on the "Doughnut economics" framework, Tom highlights how biophilic design can create multiple value streams. A single tree, for example, provides services that would cost thousands to replicate artificially – from air purification to carbon sequestration, from temperature regulation to mental health benefits. This is going to be one to keep an eye on.. NEW Study launched into relationship between people and nature. Started in 2022, the RENEW project, led by the University of Exeter and funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, is a five-year programme of research to develop solutions to one of the major environmental challenges for humankind: the renewal of biodiversity. The wealth of plants and animals that are threatened with global extinction is a major concern. Biodiversity underpins human existence and RENEW is working to find ways that we can use the power of people—whether organisations, communities or individuals—to renew this essential life support system. Understanding how exposure to natural spaces and biodiversity renewal impacts people—their interactions with and attitudes towards nature, as well as their health and well-being—is an important part of this programme of work. #biophilicdesign #biophiliccities #biophilia #urbandesign #biodiversity https://lnkd.in/eZfTV4ec

You need to know this… if anyone doubts that action mitigating climate change doesn’t have an impact they are wrong. For us, implementing Biophilic design in our urban planning, in our architecture, in our town designs, in landscape architecture, schools, hospitals, new home builds, when done holistically with regenerative principles can transform our spaces and places, and stop financial losses. Investing in nature solves business challenges, as Robert Gardner says here….
Investing in Nature to Solve Business Challenges | Creating a World Worth Living In by recognising Nature as Business-Critical Infrastructure | CEO & Co-Founder @Rebalance Earth
Climate change is a future problem.” I hear this all the time. (Here’s why it’s actually a right now problem.) First, a mindset shift: Climate change isn’t just an environmental risk. It’s a financial risk. Let’s break it down. ➜ 1. Businesses are already losing $100 billion a year That number isn’t from a far-off projection—it’s happening right now in EBITDA losses. And if we don’t act, it’s set to exceed $1 trillion by 2035. You might be thinking: Where’s the impact today? Easy—look at infrastructure: 🚆 Network Rail lost 1.5 million minutes of operational time last year due to climate-related disruptions. 🌊 Water utilities are getting hit hard by flooding, leading to massive financial losses. 🛒 Supply chains are under pressure, impacting supermarkets, distributors, and ultimately, consumers. ➜ 2. This isn’t just about risk. It’s about opportunity. Protecting business assets means investing in resilient infrastructure—roads, railways, ports, airports. The companies that act now won’t just survive—they’ll thrive. Instead of seeing climate adaptation as a cost, smart businesses will treat it as an investment. ➜ 3. Want to understand the full picture? Check out the latest Accenture & World Economic Forum report—it breaks down the risks and the solutions. 💡 The question isn’t if businesses should act. It’s how fast they can move. How is your company preparing for climate-driven financial risks? #ClimateRisk #BusinessResilience #Sustainability #ClimateFinance #Infrastructure
