🌍 Community Engagement in Humanitarian Action Toolkit (CHAT) 🌍 Check out the CHAT 🤩 ! This toolkit was developed in collaboration with UNICEF, CDAC Network, GOARN - Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, and Collective Service. The CHAT provides practical tools for Community Engagement and Social and Behaviour Change in emergencies, covering natural disasters, conflict and fragile situations, disease outbreaks and epidemics, and complex humanitarian emergencies. 🛠️ Nine steps for using the CHAT: 🌟 Understand a country’s specific humanitarian context to see how Community Engagement and Social and Behaviour Change fit into crisis response. 🌟 Examine the nature of the crisis, align with local standards, and develop a proactive readiness plan to establish systems for community engagement and behaviour change before emergencies strike. 🌟 Advocate for embedding community engagement and behaviour change approaches within every stage of humanitarian programming to ensure these systems are robust and lasting. 🌟 Tap into existing local structures to support community engagement efforts, or, if needed, establish coordination networks with local organisations and agencies. 🌟 Collect community feedback and data inclusively to guide your response, prioritising the needs of the most marginalised and vulnerable communities. 🌟 Create a detailed plan for community engagement and behaviour change that aligns with all stages of crisis response, integrating feedback and focusing on vulnerable groups based on age, gender, disability, and socioeconomic status. 🌟 Provide critical information, correct misconceptions, and promote positive social and cultural values using a variety of communication channels to ensure everyone is reached. 🌟 Build relationships with media from the start to counter misinformation and enhance communication during crises. 🌟 Continuously adjust and expand community engagement and behaviour change efforts to meet changing needs in any humanitarian setting. 🔍 Ethical Content Guidelines ⚖ We 💗 these guidelines from Siobhan Warrington and Wouter Fransen and Oxfam International, which are designed to ensure that communications assets are gathered, managed, and used ethically, respecting the rights of all contributors to participate and be heard, to experience dignity and respect, to make informed and voluntary decisions, and to be safeguarded from risk and harm. The guidelines are organised into the following sections: ⭐ Working together: upholding people’s rights in collaboration with others. ⭐ Do no harm: assessing and mitigating risks to contributors. ⭐ Informed Consent: empowering people to share their own story (or not). ⭐ Showing respect: further responsibilities to contributors. ⭐ Processing content: ensuring data protection after the shoot. ⭐ Using content: integrity and accuracy in our communications. 🌐 Gender-based Violence Disclosure Toolkit 🌐 Need guidance on responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) disclosures in humanitarian settings? This is a great toolkit from Kim Thuy Seelinger and Julia Uyttewaal and the Center for Human Rights, Gender and Migration (CHRGM) at Washington University in St. Louis. It is designed to equip organisations and individuals across various sectors with tools to handle disclosures safely and appropriately. The toolkit offers practical advice for both GBV specialists and non-specialists to: ✅ Co-create safe environments for survivors to disclose their experiences if they choose. ✅ Support workers in receiving and responding to disclosures emphasising safety, dignity, and healing. ✅ Raise community awareness about GBV and available survivor support services. This toolkit is designed for service providers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and United Nations (UN) agencies working with displaced populations. 📚 Later Is a Cis-Hetero Patriarchal Time Zone: Narratives of Resistance to LGBTQI+ Inclusion amongst Humanitarian Practitioners📚 We 😍 this journal article from Ilaria M. in the Journal of Refugee Studies. "...humanitarian discourses implicitly or explicitly relegate LGBTQI+ inclusion efforts to the future tense. During humanitarian crises, I contend, the future is never proximate, but rather an endlessly delayable horizon—intended here as a vanishing point, that which cannot be reached—towards which all hopes for LGBTQI+ recognition are oriented." - Illaria Michelis Here's a quick rundown of some narratives you may have heard: 🤨 There’s nothing we can do: law and culture: Local laws and cultural norms prevent the inclusion of LGBTQI+ individuals. 🤨 Training first: Specific training on LGBTQI+ issues is required before addressing their specific needs in practice. 🤨 Data first: Interventions should be informed by data specific to LGBTQI+ communities before taking action. 🤨 Women first: The needs of cisgender women should be prioritised. 🤨 Partners first: Partnerships with organisations and communities in situ ensure contextual relevance and should be prioritised...even if they hold conservative views perpetuating exclusion or discrimination of LGBTQI+ people. The article calls for a greater understanding and acknowledgement of how we (yes, you too!) are reinforcing gendered, racialised and heteronormative systems so that we can do better for people with diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC).
