Farming, Ranching, Forestry

A natural capital and nature-based solutions company focused on the marine environment.

About us

KALY is developing a sustainable, low-cost supply chain for farmed seaweed in Europe that includes production, value-added processing, and product development. From our home base on the beautiful Isle of Skye, we are methodically building the backbone of an entire industry in conjunction with partners from industry, academia, and government. The many exciting applications for farmed seaweed - along with the ecosystem services in the sea and implications for land use ashore that seaweed farming can deliver - are only meaningful provided that vast quantities of biomass are produced and processed at a competitive price point. Moving down the cost curve, achieving economies of scale, and developing proprietary technology and processes is the name of the game for KALY. Additionally, KALY is focused on the advancement of marine natural capital as an investable asset class through initial market enablement exercises and stakeholder engagement leading to live project development for the replenishment of depleted marine species that serve as healthy ecosystem engineers. KALY is focused on building social license through delivering economic opportunity to coastal communities whose livelihoods depend on the seas. Without their agreement, KALY will not be able to scale its activities and transform the way society uses the oceans.

A few weeks ago Kaly Group was visited by a Deutsche Welle film crew who were creating a segment about the seaweed industry on Skye. Our Iain Matheson proudly showed off the new boat (and our fast growing biomass of course), with other businesses on Skye showcasing other parts of the seaweed value chain, supplying into the human food, biostimulant and animal feed markets. As the segment notes, the Isle of Skye seaweed community is very much alive and works hand-in-hand with the wider fishing and tourism community. #seaweed #community #naturebasedsolutions https://lnkd.in/eff3cNNs

The Spring 2024 season has concluded! Our first batch of dried seaweed from the Loch Bay test farm has just arrived in the mail. Expertly dried and chopped by Eco Cascade, we now have a modest 15kg of sample product to share with our customers and other interested parties. Kaly Group remains dedicated to data collection to better understand how the chemical composition of seaweed varies annually and by location. We believe that achieving superior, consistent quality is essential for seaweed to compete effectively with land-grown biomass. With a full slate of activities planned for the summer, we continue to address every step of the supply chain, from seedstock to refined biomaterial. Wild-harvested seaweed has already proven its potential to reach large-scale markets in Europe, offering, despite ecological drawbacks, a price advantage compared to cultivated seaweed. Only by solving supply chain inefficiencies does cultivated seaweed have any chance of providing its many benefits to customers on a national scale. #naturebasedsolutions #seaweed #netzero #sustainableinfrastructure

Kaly Group is carefully working through its farm testing phase, collecting data where it can. Careful analysis of data gathered will hopefully provide valuable insights into biomass growth rates and drivers, changes in chemical composition throughout the season and effects our seaweed farming may have on the natural environment. -> Optimise production of the most valuable chemical components for our customer base. -> Understand how to drive biomass yields so we can eventually lower our cost of production. -> Selection of future farming sites with the highest potential for profitable production. At this first stage, we are partnering with UMITRON in the usage of satellite data, providing us daily data on 8 variables (sea surface temperature, temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll A levels, salinity, wave heights, ocean currents and wind). In subsequent phases we will hook up the satellite data with actual local data buoys, further enhancing data quality. With its distinct topography, it is highly interesting to us to see how, a small marine area around the Isle of Skye, Scotland already contains such different levels of for instance cholorophyll A, an indicator of nutrient levels in the water. #seaweed #naturebasedsolutions

We can’t get enough of our seaweed farm..! After 10 weeks in the water we have already reached biomass of 10kg/metre (sugar kelp). For us that is double good news. 1. With yields at 2 to 3 times that of certain other European waters, efficiencies of scale and a competitive unit cost of production will be achieved much earlier. 2. With such growth in just 10 weeks, could we dare dream of two harvests per year? With a just-in time harvest in June, product samples and spec sheets will find its way to our customers very the summer. Exciting times ahead! #naturebasedsolutions #seaweed #sustainableinfrastructure #netzero Hortimare

Happy Easter everyone! What better thing to do on a sunny bank holiday weekend than check out your seaweed lines? It has only been six weeks since our test lines went into the water, outside of the traditional seeding season, and we are already seeing a good and steady growth on the line. Soon we wil start sampling our produce at regular intervals to determine its chemical make-up. Seaweed has a large compositional variance over the season and we are determined to understand that cycle to create better products for our customers. #seaweed #sustainableinfrastructure Hortimare Iain Matheson #naturebasedsolutions

This week Kaly Group have been distributing its first trial biostimulant production to the local community on Waternish, Isle of Skye. We are running these trials with enthusiastic gardeners and growers as a part of a community initiative to demonstrate the power of the seas on land. Over the coming months, the trials will be carefully monitored through data collection on soil quality, growth rates and other qualitative factors. With the assistance of our in-house scientist Omar A., results, due by June will be used to inform our work in the more controlled test environment of our academic partners.

Kaly Group has deployed its first farming test lines in Loch Bay, Northwest Skye. The aim is to establish how well the site performs for different seaweed types using a variety of growing mediums. Data being collected will inform future growing techniques and which seaweeds deliver the optimum compositions to meet customer requirements.    As part of our commitment to net zero we deployed re-purposed marine infrastructure including anchors, chains, ropes and buoys. Fortunately a gap in the weather last week allowed the team to assemble the equipment and coordinate collection and deployment in a day with help from the team at Jiffmar and at Dunvegan pier - a big thanks also to Dunvegan Estates for all their assistance.    The team from Hortimare completed a busy week teaching us how to setup our test lines using a variety of different mediums to attach seedlings grown from locally sourced kelp spores collected last year. We learned a great deal and are really greatful for their patience, expertise and dedication to get us up and running. Above all we are absolutely thrilled to have taken another step on our journey by getting the trial lines deployed successfully and now look forward to seeing the rewards over the coming months. #seaweed #sustainableinfrastructure #naturebasedsolutions #biobased https://lnkd.in/eyertqbA
