R&D Tax Credit Trends 2024: What Building Engineering Firms Need to Know... Every year, HMRC publishes key statistics on R&D tax credits, and for 2024, these were released in late September. They provide a snapshot of the 2022/23 tax year while also updating figures for prior years. The data paints a compelling picture, especially for businesses in building engineering services, where innovation is crucial to remain competitive and compliant with increasingly stringent regulations. This year’s data highlights a few significant trends, largely linked to HMRC’s push for stricter compliance following reports of error and fraud within the R&D tax relief scheme. Here are some key takeaways: - Total tax relief claimed rose by 1%, hitting £7.5 billion - Corporate R&D expenditure increased by 4%, reaching £46.7 billion - A 21% drop in the number of R&D tax relief claims (23% reduction in the SME scheme and 9% in RDEC) - A sharp drop in smaller claims (under £15,000 - Average claim value increased by 28% But what does this mean for the Building Engineering Services Sector? For companies in the building engineering services sector, where R&D is critical for developing energy-efficient systems, sustainable materials, and improved technologies, these trends could have a major impact. The most striking headline is the 21% reduction in overall claims, largely driven by a 23% drop in the SME scheme. A closer look at the data reveals an interesting pattern: claims over £250,000 have increased by at least 10%, while those under £250,000 have seen a decline of at least 10%. Smaller claims (especially those under £15,000) have dropped by as much as 35%. We are excited to announce that BESA Members can now access R&D funding support through Kene Partners | B Corp™, specialists in R&D funding, who have empowered SMEs to secure over £135 million in financial benefits since 2017. By supporting UK innovation, they offer expert guidance on R&D tax credits, the patent box, and grants, helping businesses maximise their funding opportunities. As proud members of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Kene Partners deliver industry-leading advice and service.

📢 Another major win for SMEs 📢 A Tribunal has just ruled against HM Revenue & Customs in a groundbreaking case that could be the breakthrough SMEs have been waiting for. Collins Construction Ltd, with the support of their advisor, took HMRC to court after their R&D Tax Credit claims were denied on the grounds of being "subsidised" or "sub-contracted." The Tribunal confirmed that HMRC’s interpretation was off the mark – bringing clarity to rules that have caused frustration for SMEs for years. 🌟 Why does this matter? This ruling could make a significant impact on future claims, offering SMEs more confidence and clarity when investing in R&D. We’ll keep a close eye on further developments, but it’s a hopeful step toward ensuring that deserving businesses get the relief they need to grow and innovate. 💬 Want to know what this could mean for your R&D tax claims? This ruling might just be the support your business has been waiting for. Get in touch: https://lnkd.in/emYJkGpX
