Our charity partners, Community Links and Neighbours in Poplar, play an integral role in helping people in the Docklands area. Neighbours In Poplar Located just behind our depot at Poplar, Neighbours in Poplar has provided a vital community support network for vulnerable people in the Poplar area for the past 50 years. KAD and DLRL have worked closely with Neighbours in Poplar for many years, principally through the Community Ambassador scheme, but also in community engagement and identifying the charity as a link with some of our vulnerable users. Community Links Community Links is a hub tackling health and social inequality in London and beyond. They work alongside the community, helping people of all ages reach their full potential. They believe everyone can thrive if they have three basic things: good people around them, a good place to live, and a purpose in life. KAD is dedicated to continuing our collaboration with these remarkable organisations who play a critical role they play in improving the quality of life for individuals in our community. Celebrating a Decade of Dedication 🎊👩✈️🚆 Our incredible journey over the past decade wouldn't have been possible without our extraordinary team. Karyn Thienel, Customer Experience Assistant, has been with us throughout the entire KAD franchise and has dedicated over 30 years to DLR! Read her reflections on our 10-year journey below! Meet Karyn Thienel: A Lifelong Journey with DLR I’ve proudly worked with DLR for 34 years, and we are affectionately known as “lifers.” My first 16 years were as a Train Captain, the previous name for a PSA. We started with 11 trains with doors that had a habit of “coming loose.” Over the years, we welcomed a few different trains, and the sliding door was a game-changer! 😊 In my role as a Train Captain, I was one of the first to take an in-service train into Bank. Needless to say, there were many spotters awaiting the first arrival. In my other role as a “DLR Character,” I dressed as a mole to advertise the upcoming opening (thankfully, there are no pictures!). I had the honour of being the last train into Island Gardens before it was closed for the construction of the Lewisham extension. There were reporters and local dignitaries on board. I’m sure pieces of the station traveled back to Poplar with us and are still on someone’s living room wall. I was also one of the first Train Captains to take a train through the tunnel when the Lewisham extension opened. In 2000, I was seconded to Metro services in Copenhagen with some colleagues. They were setting up a new automated railway and wanted experienced staff to shadow their new recruits and test the trains and signalling system. It was great fun. Sharing my experience with a colleague, knowing they would go on to a similar role, gave me a sense of pride. Even being trackside in a few feet of snow didn’t faze me! In my last 18 years as a Customer Experience Assistant, 10 of those with KAD, I’ve adapted my customer-facing skills to a more office-based role. My 16 years of Train Captain experience give me the knowledge I need for handling customer correspondence. I pride myself on being, as my new manager calls me, “a solver.” When the community ambassadors became part of our team, it provided the opportunity to interact with our customers face-to-face again. Over the past few years, our department has welcomed many new staff, giving me another opportunity to share my experiences and learn new ones. The most recent and close to heart is joining a team of Wellbeing Ambassadors, and I look forward to continuing this role. I still marvel at the changes to the surrounding areas of the railway, from the first days in 1987 to the current day. I recently realised I have driven all the current rolling stock. Inspiring the Future of the Transport Industry 👩🎓🚉✨ Earlier this month, KAD attended a Careers Fair at one of our local partner schools, Langdon Park Secondary School and Sixth Form, to help students explore a wide range of career opportunities in the transport sector. The event allowed students to learn directly from colleagues at KAD about the desirable skills needed in the transport industry. Our Community Ambassadors team, along with Engineering colleagues Shankar Chaudhari CEng CMgr FICE FCMI MIAM and Bhavishka Seewoo, attended the fair to showcase the various opportunities within KADs Engineering department. They shared insights and provided live testimonials about their career journeys. The team engaged with over 250 students from years 9-12, who were keen to learn about the rail industry and the professional growth opportunities at KAD. Celebrating Secure Station Accreditation! 🚉🎉 Last month, KAD proudly celebrate two decades of Secure Station Accreditation on the DLR network. This prestigious certification recognises railway stations that meet the highest standards of security and safety. Achieving this accreditation ensures our stations implement effective measures to reduce crime and enhance the safety and confidence of both passengers and staff. These measures include surveillance, good lighting, clear signage, and a regular staff presence, among other security features. The journey of Secure Station Accreditation on the DLR began in 2004 with 12 stations achieving accreditation. By 2015 under the KeolisAmey Docklands franchise, all 45 DLR stations were accredited. This year, we have successfully passed re-accreditation for all 45 stations, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to providing a safe and secure railway for everyone. Celebrating collaborative working with our PTA 🚉🤝✨ The teams from Docklands Light Railway Limited (DLRL) and KeolisAmey Docklands (KAD) today held our annual joint collaboration workshop. Our collaborative relationship has been a central theme of our franchise, and these workshops provide an excellent opportunity to unite as one team and explore ways to enhance our service excellence for passengers and local communities. Hosted by Tom Page from DLRL and Richard Graham from KAD, the event was a valuable and engaging afternoon with over 80 attendees from both organisations. A special thank you to Martin Taylor, Head of Strategy at Transport for London, for joining us and sharing TfL's future strategies on customers, colleagues, safety & security, environmental, and economic growth. Together, we reviewed collaborative initiatives delivered over the past year including Access DLR assisted travel trial, depot extension works and the opening of the London City Airport DLR station information centre.
