An interesting case study: Exploring new and innovative forensic approaches ⬇️ Advances in digital forensics using artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and better data science have not been matched by those adopted in ‘wet’ forensics. There is a hypothesis that using digital approaches can further techniques used and explored for wet. The Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE) was asked to help build a better understanding of what the state of the art is in current science research and how that could impact and drive increased analytic insight on scene samples. Isn't DNA just mind-blowing? 🧬 🤯 More than five centuries after Christopher Columbus re-shaped history by opening up the New World to European exploration, scientists say they are now ready to reveal the truth about his origins. Was Columbus a native of Genoa, or born elsewhere? After more than two decades of research, scientists say they have enough evidence to solve the argument over his birthplace. In 2003, José Antonio Lorente, professor of forensic medicine at Granada University, and the historian Marcial Castro, exhumed what were believed to the remains of Columbus from Seville cathedral to take DNA samples. They also took DNA from the bones of his son, Hernando, and brother, Diego. Since then, they have compared the DNA with that of historical figures from different countries and regions in order to solve the mystery, using technological advances to ensure the veracity of the results. We're blooming proud of our sunflowers 🌻🌻 As part of our commitment to improving our environment, and making the best of what was a tired little space in the middle of our Coventry office, we decided to create our own biodiversity garden. And as you can see from the results, it's really blossomed! Staff have given their time to develop the area, and the business provided financial contribution for the items we needed to make this a much better place, both for us and the much smaller neighbours we share the space with 🐝 We have bee houses, bee-friendly planting, and a little competition with our sunflowers. The area will soon be made ‘winter ready’ with additional planting, meaning our staff members now have a relaxing space to enjoy during their breaks, and a sunnier outlook while working in surrounding areas 🌞 Our sunflowers have even been turning heads with our customers and visitors, who have been quick to compliment our little garden. Thank you to everyone involved, it just goes to show what you can achieve when the seed of an idea is planted, nurtured and allowed to flourish 💚

🧬 Forensics news: How new familial DNA could help solve a 1983 murder. Police Scotland officers investigating the murder of 58-year-old taxi driver George Murdoch in Aberdeen 41 years ago have announced a significant development in the case. Advancements in forensic science have now led to a DNA profile from the scene being identified. Police Scotland have confirmed this profile has been further enhanced to allow officers to search for anyone related to the DNA sample, known as familial DNA. “This new DNA data is significant and will help take us a step closer to getting justice for Mr Murdoch’s family," said Detective Inspector James Callander. What happens if a window is broken at the point of entry in a burglary, or as a result of criminal damage, or if glass objects are broken during an assault❓ If someone is close to breaking glass during any of those scenarios mentioned, tiny fragments of glass may be transferred on to their skin, hair and clothing. At our forensic laboratories, our experts – who have many years’ experience working within the Criminal Justice landscape – are able to recover glass fragments and carry out physical and elemental tests to compare them to the control glass at the scene 🔍 If the recovered glass fragments match the control glass, then the expert will decide on the strength of evidence based upon the number of matching fragments, the commonality of the control glass and the case circumstances. We can then provide court testimony once we have fully assessed our findings. We are very proud of our Glass Trace Evidence service at KFS, and our experts are highly-skilled at evaluating complex cases involving breaking or broken glass.
