Helping ambitious brands to make their investment into SEO & digital PR work harder.

Some of the most common SEO opportunities I see for eCommerce stores are related to faceted navigation. Here's how to get faceted navigation right as an eCommerce brand 👇 Faceted navigation issues usually fall into one of two groups: 1️⃣ Too many facet pages are indexed by Google. 2️⃣ Not enough facets are indexed or key ones are missing. Let's look at these issues and how to fix them. 1. Too many facet pages are indexed by Google. Allowing all facets to be indexed is DANGEROUS and is not recommended. This can result in facets stacking and generating an almost infinite amount of URLs. I’ve seen stores with 2k products having 2.5million URLs indexed because of this. For example: /category/brand/colour/size/under-20/sale/ No one searches this granular. And what if two brands are selected on the faceted nav? /category/brand+brand/colour/size/under-20/sale/ See how this can scale from just a few attributes? Having more facets indexed than you need creates a nightmare for eCommerce SEO: 👉 Duplicate content 👉 Keyword cannibalization issues 👉 Crawl budget issues 👉 Index bloat You don’t want to index facets that have no search demand. If there’s demand, you’ll want facets to be indexable so that you’re properly matching search intent. But you need to make sure these facets have: ✅ Unique title tags & H1 tags ✅ Unique content Be led by search demand from your favourite keyword research tool to define what should and shouldn’t be indexed. Either Semrush or Ahrefs are my preference for this. If there’s demand, and Google is ranking granular pages for this (use Keyword Insights to cluster keywords), the facet should be indexed. Otherwise, it shouldn't. To remove faceted pages from Google‘s index, add noindex tags to those you want deindexing. Make sure these facets are NOT blocked in the robots.txt file. 2. Not enough facets are indexed or key ones are missing. To rank for a query, you need a relevant page that matches search intent. This means that most sites will need the facets with search demand to be indexable. It‘s common to see all facets blocked from being indexed and the site not ranking for granular keywords. Opening facets up and getting them indexed can help create a step-up in visibility. Common facets that often have demand include: 👉 Colour (e.g. red dresses) 👉 Type (e.g. maxi dresses) 👉 Brand (e.g. Ted Baker dresses) 👉 Room (e.g. dining room tables) You need to make sure that the facets you want to be indexed: ✅ Aren‘t blocked with a noindex tag ✅ Are not blocked from being crawled in robots.txt file ✅ Are accessible via href links, not JavaScript links ✅ Are in XML and HTML sitemaps ✅ Use search engine-friendly URLs, not query strings Both of these issues are way too common. Get faceted navigation right and expect to see a step-up in organic search visibility, traffic & revenue. It just needs strategic planning and controls put in place to define which facets are indexed. #SEO #eCommerce
