We’re proud to announce our commitment to voluntary nature-related reporting in line with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Recommendations. This significant step was shared at the COP16 summit on Friday, 25 October, bringing together representatives from 196 countries to discuss global biodiversity. As a newly registered TNFD Adopter, we will begin incorporating TNFD-aligned disclosures into our corporate reporting for the financial year 2024/2025. At Kier, we recognise the vital importance of preserving and improving natural habitats. Valuing nature is a core part of our Building for a Sustainable World framework and a strategic focus on how we manage risk. We are already incorporating ways of working within our projects to promote biodiversity: In the last 12 months: 👉 the Lower Otter project in Devon has earned awards for its contribution to environmental restoration and is a great example of protecting properties and encouraging wildlife habitats. Scooping the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) ‘Best Practice award large-scale project mitigation, compensation and enhancement' award and the ‘Tony Bradshaw Award for Outstanding Best Practice’ recognising exceptional projects that set an overall impressively high standard. 👉 We've also been working for Severn Trent Water to create 340 biodiverse drainage basins and sustainable drainage systems across Mansfield to store more than 58 million litres of surface water and reduce the flood risk for 90,000 people while also creating nature rich spaces for the community. We know there is more to be done and we look forward to seeing the difference we can make to our people, our places & our planet. One of the oldest wooden tools ever discovered in Britain has been found at one of our sites!     Archaeologists digging at The Moors at Arne in Dorset, where we are adapting 150 hectares of grassland for the Environment Agency, were ecstatic to find a timber spade that had been undiscovered for around 3,500 years.       After the team painstakingly uncovered the extremely rare and almost completely waterlogged find, it was safely lifted and transferred to Wessex Archaeology’s labs for conservation and analysis.       Tiny samples were taken from the fragile, fascinating discovery for analysis and radiocarbon dating, which suggests it is from the Bronze Age (1500-1400 BC). Ethical labour is a key focus of our Building for a Sustainable World framework, and this initiative is part of our collective effort to educate and protect workers across the sector. Continuing our exciting work in the London residential market, we are pleased to announce that we’ve handed over MacFarlane Place at Television Centre to Mitsui Fudosan and Stanhope PLC. The highly anticipated affordable housing development in White City comprises of two residential blocks, consisting of eight and nine storeys respectively, and spanning 151,000 sq ft. The new development provides 142 mixed tenure residential units, which will be managed by Peabody, as well as 2,821 sq ft of flexible commercial space at ground floor level and a landscaped communal garden. Kier’s in-house design, decarbonisation and engineering and construction expertise enabled the team to successfully mitigate a number of logistical challenges to deliver the project, including being constrained by a tube viaduct, TV studios and residential properties.
