About us

Kingsgate specialises in helping other organisations to implement transformational change: - For the NHS and local government, supporting financial recovery and operational improvement - For private companies, addressing financial challenges and driving turnaround We have worked with troubled businesses since 1990, in all phases of decline – underperformance, distress and crisis – and have successfully delivered many turnarounds. We support businesses and services through tough times and use our specialist skills, expertise and experience to make organisations sustainable. For the past 20 years, we have been supporting the NHS too - working with in-house teams to reduce costs without compromising patient care. In doing so, we have helped to save many millions of pounds. Kingsgate’s team has a mixed background of board roles in the corporate environment, non-executive directorships and blue-chip management consultancy. The business was founded and is led by Managing Director, Steve Swayne. Steve is an established expert in organisational transformation, with particular experience in complex, large and difficult turnarounds. This has included extensive merger and acquisition work. He has developed a very successful turnaround track record at CEO/MD level in the public and private sector.

  • Even in the toughest cases, we believe a successful turnaround is possible. We were asked to support a British manufacturer employing 300 people. Fraud had been discovered, delaying the filing of audited accounts and putting the business in breach of a loan agreement. We acted quickly – identifying the underlying causes and overseeing the preparation of accounts. As a result, the loan was retained and stability was restored. #turnaround #finance #accounting

  • Work we’ve recently undertaken in the Midlands shows how we discover opportunities to improve NHS productivity. The Kingsgate team were asked to determine the level of actual ophthalmology theatre capacity available in the Trust. Our analysis and engagement with clinicians showed that the NHS Trust had the staff and facilities to carry out 1,000 more cataract operations a year – within its core capacity. On average, the average number of cases per operating list (ACPL) was four – less than half what’s we’d expect to see. It was a similar picture in orthopaedics, where up to 1,000 additional cases could be handled each year. The unused capacity was hindering efforts to tackle long waiting lists and more patients were choosing the independent sector. Through our work with the clinical and operational teams, the actual level of operating capacity and capability in both specialties has been accepted. The required ACPL increases are being put in place – importantly, with the objective of increasing core capacity. This collaborative approach is key to our work – agreeing the position with the local team, to then co-develop the solutions. We also coach and support implementation to ensure teams realise the benefits to patients, the service and commercially. #NHS #surgery #efficiency

  • We hear a lot about NHS paperwork, its effect on productivity and the frustrations it can create for staff. But it is possible to reduce the burden. We supported one hospital trust which wanted to move to electronic patient records, but was struggling to work out the costs and eventual benefits. The Kingsgate team worked with them to create a business case, drawing on our experience of similar projects elsewhere. We were able to show that the change would save more than £2m a year in admin costs. #NHS #digital #efficiency
