I'm thrilled to share that I've received my Post Graduate Diploma in International Marketing, awarded by Ulster University in collaboration with Invest Northern Ireland's ‘Graduate to Export’ programme and The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade. A special thank you to Dr. Patrick Ibbotson, Majella Haran, and Elaine Ramsey for their invaluable tuition and guidance throughout this programme. Your mentorship has been instrumental in this success. I also want to extend my gratitude to Jackie, Joanne, and the entire Kinsetsu team. With your support, I'm honoured to have received the award for the Best Export Market Development Project (dissertation)— this achievement wouldn’t have been possible without your encouragement and expertise. That was a brilliant day at work with London Tech Bridge and the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO). It reminded me how great our sailors are and what brilliant ideas they have. We just need to #empower them more and enable them to resolve their own challenges rather than hamstring their ability to deliver which results in frustration. It was also great having the team from Kinsetsu (Jackie Crooks John Martin) alongside us. That extended week of SME engagement along with Xpedite Group of Companies Ltd and Vikela at RNAS Yeovilton highlighted the power of connecting the frontline with specialist suppliers of dual use technology to solve problems and drive prosperity. As ever Sharon Jones and the RN Defnece Engagement Team are enhancing the RN’s profile right around the country. 60th birthday gift of bowel screening A few weeks ago I celebrated my 60th birthday (actually I began celebrating a few months ago and will continue at least until I turn 61!). I can honestly say I feel nothing but gratitude and delight to have got here - not least because it makes me think of the many people I have known and loved who haven't made it and I believe it's my duty to make the most of the fact that I have. The first person I think of every birthday is my late great friend Rosi Kirker, who was prevented from reaching so many milestones by #bowelcancer Rosi was only 3 months younger than me and we had celebrated several big milestones together over the years. I still miss her dreadfully, 13 years later, and always shed a few tears on these special occasions (as well as on many others throughout the year) but most of all I can hear her wild party voice in my ear saying 'dry your eyes wee girl and get on with the celebrations for me!' For the big 6-0 I received many beautiful and generous gifts from my friends and family, but this particular gift from the Bowel Screening NI Programme had an extra special meaning - when Rosi was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 46 she coped, in part, by devoting herself to fundraising and campaigning (ie. torturing anyone who would listen) for awareness and particularly for screening for the disease. Her late brother practised medicine in Australia and was all too aware of the contrast in the screening services there. The current programme in NI (for 60-74 year olds) (https://lnkd.in/eqxqrrcf) was introduced in 2010 (tragically too late for Rosi). In Scotland it begins at 50, in England 54 (being extended to 50) and in Wales it's 51. Many of us who are involved with Bowel Cancer UK have been engaged in campaigning to extend the lower age in NI to 50 - we are so far behind the others and we desperately need to save more lives, which this simple test can do So it was with gratitude that I received my gift of the screening test, but also with sadness and frustration that we still are not doing all that we could, and all that Rosi wished for, in terms of screening. I'm very pleased to add that I received the confirmation today - less than a week after posting back my test - that all is well.
