Patients and staff at Orchards Ward recently came together for an exciting Quality Improvement (QI) project, collaborating on a vibrant mural that has turned hospital walls into a therapeutic space. 🎨🌟 Led by Art Psychotherapists Sophie Cachia and Hannah Haynes, patients discovered how creativity can enhance wellbeing and create a calming environment. 🌿 Reflecting on the project, Sophie said: “The idea was that the patients can feel empowered by leaving their marks on the walls, while encouraging more of a calming space, instead of sterile white walled hospital. “It was important that people enjoyed the process of taking part in creating the mural – as well as the artwork having a positive long-term impact on both patients and colleagues. “One of the patients enjoyed taking part in the project so much that he has started to paint a second mural on the ward which has received a lot of positive feedback." 💫 Thank you to everyone who participated and made a difference on Orchard Ward. If you would like to find out more about the QI project, please contact Sophie Cachia on: sophie.cachia@nhs.net #QIProject #QualityImprovement #ArtTherapy #ArtPsychotherapists

On Thursday 3 October the NHS in Kent and Medway marked the start of Black History Month with an event celebrating our black colleagues and discussing how we can empower the next generation through mentorship and coaching. Representatives from across the NHS and local government spoke passionately about issues close to their heart and how together, we can address racism and inequalities. KMPT’s Chief Executive Sheila Stenson talked about the journey the trust is on to improve equality, diversity and inclusivity and how impactful the listening events held with colleagues have been. Cedi Frederick, NHS Kent & Medway Integrated Care Board Chair, challenged all those in attendance to be authentic and asked allies to support with culture change – we can only make real change by working together. From Medway Council, Douglas Hamandishe Deputy Major, spoke about the importance of challenging existing perceptions and advocated the importance of choice-led change in organisations and of speaking our truths. The event was closed by Paul Bentley, Chief Executive for NHS Kent & Medway , who asked everyone present to keep challenging their leaders to do better when it comes to tackling the issues around equality, diversity and inclusivity, and to keep the conversation of race equality going. #BHM2024 #ReclaimingNarratives
