The National Space Innovation Programme (NSIP) is the UK Space Agency's dedicated programme to support the development of innovation in the UK’s space sector. NSIP will play an important role in co-funding the development of new UK innovations, de-risking high-quality R&D and creating economic and societal benefits. At know.space we are proud to be leading a consortium supporting UKSA in monitoring, evaluating and managing the benefits of NSIP, leading on impact and economic evaluation, together with our partners at RAND Europe who are leading on process evaluation. Our consortium also contains several expert advisers, with world-leading expertise ranging from econometrics through to innovation financing. As well as supporting ongoing programme benefits management activities, the project will play a key role in shaping subsequent phases of NSIP, and in supporting evidence-based decision-making and policy design in the future. The UK Space Agency's North Star Metric - the principal metric by which UKSA measures its success - seeks to monitor the value of investment and income they bring into the UK space sector. know.space were commissioned to support UKSA in the collation, collection and reporting of North Star Metric data. Our report published this month - which represents the first comprehensive effort to measure Metric outcomes across the Agency - shows that: 💵 In all programme areas we found clear evidence of a link between Agency funding and new investment and revenues. 🛰 While the impact story is still unfolding (and Metric reporting has only been required since 2022), UKSA funding we examined has so far generated £533m in match funding, £51m in revenues, £286m in private investment and £32m in internal investment, as well as 380 new jobs. 📡Forecasts are not included in our central estimates given uncertainty and risk of optimism bias, but show expectations for £1bn+ additional revenues in coming years, plus hundreds of millions of investment and 1,000+ new jobs. 💰 A complementary 'top down' assessment found that companies who received in-scope UKSA / ESA funding in the last 5 years collectively went on to secure £357m in investment (excluding 2 'mega-deals' valued at £7.2bn). 🚀 Over the 2012-22 period £11.7bn was invested in the UK space sector, with 83% of this having taken place since 2019. As we look ahead to 2024, we're also delighted to welcome new team members. Jane Davies has joined us from the Satellite Applications Catapult, and brings a fresh perspective with a background in space anthropology and expertise in qualitative research. Joining us at the start of January, Ferdinand Turral is currently an economist at Ricardo Energy and Environment, experienced in conducting socioeconomic impact assessments for both public and private clients. Fantastic talk by Martin Barstow yesterday on Gaia: 10 years of mapping the Milky Way at Space Park Leicester. Earlier this year we published our interim impact evaluation of Gaia. There can be little doubt that the mission is already a scientific success story, with the impact set to grow for years and decades to come.
