We want to say a big thank you to Andrew Davies for taking part in our Leaders in Action Series last week with his session ‘Dinosaurs Made Me Do It, Dopamine Made Me Glad I Did!’, an impactful workshop that explored the fascinating interplay between behavioural psychology and decision making.    Andrew first discussed the human brain and its structural make-up when it comes to making decisions, exploring what happens within our brain when the presence of Dopamine is abundant vs depleted Dopamine levels.    We feel more positive when there’s an abundance of Dopamine present within the brain. We also have stronger levels of energy and focus, which can be applied to almost any situation in that moment.  With depleted levels of Dopamine in the brain our mood and feelings are less positive towards situations, we experience higher levels of fatigue, and our behaviours are less positive.    This led to an engaging discussion with the group based around scenarios linked to decision making and the emotions involved. The group shared personal and professional examples, talking about the circumstances, the outcomes, and how things could have gone better.    The next part of the Workshop covered how Stimulus creates a Reaction and how this affects our emotions. In some cases, we can experience challenging emotions, sometimes even an overreaction to our own stimulus.    To improve the stimulus impact, we must reflect on the reason for the stimulus occurring and better understand how to control the reaction through emotions. Andrew provided details on a useful model that highlights the 4 main symptoms of someone with depleted Dopamine levels: ‘HALT’ (Hungry, Angry, Late & Tired).    The final part of the session covered other well-known business and leadership models that can support the awareness of Dopamine impacts on individuals, including the Drama Triangle. Andrew rounded off the session with the following key takeaways from the session.    → Engage in Mindfulness & Meditation.  → Think about Common Humanity and Compassion.  → Notice Without Judgement.  → Call out when People are Playing Games.  → Act with Integrity and Intention.  → Think HALT!!     We’re excited to host more of these inspiring sessions over the upcoming months, with all learners and clients getting access. So, we’re 18 days into our charity fundraiser challenge at KnowledgeBrief and we’ve collectively covered a mighty 448 miles out of 874, placing us in Penrith! We’d like to celebrate the efforts of our team so far and share some of the photos they’ve taken along the way. With Rob Nuttall walking across the fields of Ribble Valley with a couple of mooing friends, and Nathan Moyler-Black on his early morning 8am walk across the countryside. We still have a way to go with completing our challenge, but with the rest of the month ahead we’re feeling inspired to smash it! Help us hit our £1000 goal with this fundraiser for Young Lives vs Cancer and the incredible work they do ↓ https://lnkd.in/eBbRwD2D

We want to say a big thank you to Andrew Parkinson for taking part in our Leaders in Action Series last week with his session on ‘Enhancing Effective Leadership Through Online Meetings’.      Andrew has been working with remote and virtual teams for over 20 years, sometimes as a leader and manager but also as a deeply experienced facilitator of learning.   Andrew brought some interesting and impactful theories to the talk, linked to how we can lead more effectively whilst in online environments with our teams. He kicked the session off with an exercise called ‘The Round’ where he engaged small teams into an online meeting scenario. This activity explored the common pitfalls linked to virtual meetings and the actions that can help alleviate some of the communication issues often experienced during them.       Andrew then looked to the participants for their thoughts on establishing protocols before online meetings. The audience engaged well on this subject, sharing their experiences of setting communication protocols, highlighting what had and hadn’t worked well for them in the past. Andrew went on to sharing his thoughts on how to build trust in online meetings, using the model below, with the five key stages of ‘TRUST’.      Transparency → open about what is on your mind   Relationship → power with vs power over   Understanding → standing under, empathy   Shared Success → vs addicted to being right   Truth Telling → saying what you see, testing assumptions       Andrew facilitated the audience in building a model of trust that allows for maximum participation in a meeting, whilst ensuring that the individuals providing input have a direct link to the subject in discussion.   The session was a great insight into the challenges that leaders can face when seeking effective communication during online meetings.      We’re excited to host more of these inspiring sessions over the upcoming months, with all learners and clients getting access. Attention all learners: Upcoming guest speaker!   On Tuesday, 15th October at 12:00, KnowledgeBrief is excited to host a Leaders in Action session featuring Andrew Davies, an expert in leadership psychology and behavioural science. During this session, we will explore the fascinating interplay between behavioural psychology and decision-making. Why do we make the choices we do, and what drives our behaviours? We will dive into how our ancient instincts and neurochemistry, such as the role of dopamine, shape our decisions in the modern world. What does this mean for our leadership styles, and how can we leverage this understanding to improve our decision-making, both personally and professionally? Dr. Davies brings over 22 years of experience in the public sector, particularly within the NHS, where he has held key leadership roles. Educated at prestigious institutions such as Ashridge School of Business, Yale University, and the NHS Leadership Academy; Dr. Davies offers a unique blend of real-world insights and academic knowledge that equips leaders with strategies to improve decision-making and leadership effectiveness.   All learners and clients get access to these inspiring sessions completely free.
