Today is the 10th annual 'International Day of Women and Girls in Science', the purpose of which is to achieve full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls. At Kudos Blends we are proud and delighted to have so many talented and outstanding women in our science and bakery team who have been able to follow their ambitions and achieve so much in their fields. Our founder Dinnie Jordan remembers "The thirst for knowledge, an enquiring mind and the need to understand things, drove my passion for chemistry at an early age. I had my first chemistry set for Christmas aged 8 years! I was over the moon!" Laura Alston, one of our Food Scientists, summed up beautifully how the world has begun to change, led by the women before her: "I’m struggling to think of a time that my gender was a barrier to being a scientist, and I owe that to the women who went before me. I’ve been lucky in my life to have loads of other women scientists encouraging me from my mum, my science teachers at school and sixth form, lecturers at university and colleagues. When my mum was 16...she was interested in studying pharmacy and was sent away with a leaflet on becoming a hairdresser...26 years later when I was in the same position, me wanting to study science wasn’t questioned at all. It’s important to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science because it allows us to recognise how far we’ve come and that progress isn’t inevitable, but was hard-fought for...I love my job."
