Attending the HUGO BOSS Stakeholder Dialog a couple of weeks ago was an honour and encouraging experience. The discussions and panels with multiple stakeholders highlighted several key opportunities relevant to companies in the fashion sector and beyond: 🔶 Regulations such as #LkSG or #CS3D should be seen as an opportunity to dramatically reshape approaches, rather than attempting to adapt existing approaches to them. A practical example is social compliance audits – why are they still seen as the first-line approach to due diligence? What’s stopping companies reducing them by 25%, 50% or even 100% and approaching due diligence differently? 🔶 If companies do make big decisions, they will likely find they have additional resources both in time and money to develop a positive impact and create systemic change. In this sense, adapting to the UNGPs / OECD Guidelines should be understood as liberating rather than restraining, even if sometimes the sheer number of regulations can seem overwhelming. 🔶 Within this context, regulators should spend time speaking to companies and other practitioners in this space to understand what good looks like, what is even possible, and what the limits of company leverage are. 🔶 Where systemic issues exist, there should be a breaking down of taboos to engage with them collaboratively. In fact, just as we as individuals live in society, companies live in shared ecosystems. Here, they are dependent, to a greater or lesser degree, on each other as well as on their suppliers, their suppliers’ suppliers, their competitors’ suppliers, their suppliers’ suppliers certification schemes, etc. Therefore, isolated approaches to many key challenges faced in the fashion sector will reap little to no reward. To make this work, any collaborative projects need to have strong governance models, a long-term timeline and commitments, clear goals and sustained movement. With the #OECDGarmentForum2025 approaching in February, I am looking forward to exploring these ideas with companies, regulators, and other key stakeholders and seeing where the conversations take us in the next three months. In the meantime, if anyone wants to learn more about Kumi’s work in fashion, don’t hesitate to contact me. With thanks to Marta Quintana Laporta Simone Iltgen Vanessa Garrecht Ann-Kristin Erdmann-Burt and all the other HUGO BOSS employees who invited Kumi Consulting Ltd and organised such a fabulous event.

❓Has your work ever taken you to any unexpected places ❓ When I started working at Kumi Consulting Ltd, I knew I would be travelling to places I'd never have the chance or reason to visit otherwise. I did, however, not necessarily foresee that I would find myself 'testing' a women’s hairdressing and beauty training centre in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. How did I end up there? The Congo Children Trust, Kumi's charitable partner, runs a hairdressing programme in Lubumbashi to equip young mums with skills to earn a salary to support themselves and their children. Andrew Britton and I had the opportunity to visit not only the hair salon captured in this picture but also their outreach centre, four homes for former street children, and their primary and secondary school. Wherever we went, we were welcomed with smiles, dancing and singing. It was a truly humbling and inspiring experience, and I am very grateful to the Congo Children Trust for organising a great visit and warm welcome! We asked our female colleagues to share their #minesite experiences, and here are the key points: 🪨 Mine sites vary greatly—size, type, climate, people, and even food! 🪨 Women can face cultural challenges, like not always being recognised as the lead assessor. 🪨 Safety concerns can feel different for women compared to their male colleagues. 🪨 Addressing security challenges on site is crucial. Hear more from Mariana Granziera and Fiona Bryant Hutmacher on how their experiences have shaped them through their #mining career. #sustainability #VPSHR #responsiblebusiness #diversityinmining #womeninmining https://lnkd.in/eyBk_ueY

Following Ethan Ijaz's first insight on this controversial but widespread practice, part II of the ‘Mining in heritage’ series explores how #mining companies can better manage risks to heritage when operating on the ground. Acknowledging the limitations created by the context and life cycle phase of projects, this insight highlights some of the practical approaches that companies can take on to address the challenges that make mining in heritage areas such a sensitive issue. In part II, Reconciling Interests, he breaks down: 🔍 Identifying and assessing risks to heritage; 🔍 Preventing risks to heritage once identified; 🔍 Mitigating risks to heritage when unpreventable; 🔍 Remediating impacts of risks to heritage when ‘realised’. This insight series aims to stimulate much-needed conversation about a taboo but nevertheless, critical practice, that affects the supply chain due diligence efforts of the companies that transform extractive #rawmaterials, and the brands benefitting from the products that contain them. Read more in part II, or catch up with part I below. Part I: https://lnkd.in/edwnnFeb https://lnkd.in/exsbTcnb
