Any thoughts on what is driving down rice supplies in Japan?

View profile for Bindu Yerram, graphic

Regional Commercial Manager @ Kynetec | Crop Protection

Japan is running low on Rice? Apart from below factors, I do think reduced crop area due to aging population and government policies to reduce rice production could be strong reasons for this scenario. 1. Rice supply down: Japan’s rice stocks were 32% lower at the end of July compared to the same time last year, affected by extreme weather and reduced yields. 2. Tourism impact: A surge in overseas visitors has increased demand for rice-based dishes like sushi and onigiri, further straining supplies. 3. Earthquake advisory: A mega-quake alert in early August led to a rush on rice and essentials, depleting store stocks. 4. Price pressures: Rising wheat prices due to global factors (including Russia-Ukraine war) and a weak yen have driven consumers toward rice as a cheaper alternative, adding to demand. What do you think?

💻 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐏: 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 📊 📉 𝐀𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚: Herbicides retained pole position as the most valuable sector of the Argentinian CP market at ~71% share. Fungicides gained several points of market share to sit equally with insecticides, both ~11%. Product pricing overall saw a jump of ~6%, with the biggest shift being in PGRs at ~20% increase. Despite corn and soybean cropping area up 5%, the overall Argentinian crop area was down ~9%. 📈 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝: The Thai crop protection market continued its stable market growth in 2023 and recorded an increase of 6.5%. All CP sectors showed positive development except for herbicides which declined slightly due to decreasing product prices of -18% – but they still represented more than half of market value. Glufosinate products alone (Thailand’s most relevant herbicidal active ingredient in 2023) dropped in price nearly 50% on average. For the first time since 2017, Thailand did not expand its crop area. Rice, Rubber and Cassava remained the most relevant crops. 📈 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐠𝐢𝐮𝐦: Herbicides remained the most relevant sector in Belgium, accounting for nearly 40% of market value. In general, the whole CP market in Belgium has grown by 20% of its market value since Harvest Year 2020. This growth can be traced to an increase in volume use on vegetables and corn, as well as a general price increase in nearly all sectors - other than insecticides. 📉 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤: The crop protection market in Denmark is one of the smallest in West Europe. Since Harvest Year 2019, the market has shrunk by ~25%. Herbicides make up more than 70% of the total market volume, owing to their use on the two most prevalent crops, wheat and barley. Glyphosate is the key AI in the non-selective herbicides, accounting for ~30% of the overall volume. The decline in the CP market is attributed to a strong decline in crop area, mainly driven by less area for forage crops and forestry. Kynetec is proud to support agribusiness to highlight important issues such as these.

Farming is tough, gritty work that demands resilience and a love of the land. But make no mistake: farmers are the unsung heroes of our food system. Their efforts form the foundation of #foodsecurity and society. Last year, Bayer set out to explore the sentiments of farmers and their thoughts around the challenges, opportunities and hopes for the future, commissioning the #FarmerVoice survey across eight countries worldwide. This time, we tracked many of the themes that emerged in last year’s study but sought to better understand how farmers are adapting their work in the face of rapid changes in weather and technology. We know through our day-to-day operations that many farmers attempt to farm sustainably – even regeneratively. This survey confirms that farmers know that the health of the soil in their fields is critical to improving productivity and boosting yields. And inherently, they believe in the value of #regenerativeagriculture practices to protect and restore our planetary resources and the diverse life they support. There is similar motivation when it comes to using digital technologies. Many farmers already use digital tools in their farm operations and much more are expected to adopt digitalization. Data showed that we need to address perceived monetary barriers and skills gaps to help farmers in all markets unlock the potential of digital farming and build familiarity with the potential of applied AI. As the pace of change in technology accelerates, we need to ensure that farmers can feel the benefits themselves and see a clear path toward adopting future farming technologies. Farmers want to be trusted to do the right thing. Farmers value their career and contributions and want future generations to follow in their footsteps. We can all support this work, whether we write policies, work with farmers directly, or simply benefit from the fruits of their labor. The voice of the farmer is an important one. With big challenges ahead we need to continue to listen and learn even more than in the past.
