Preventing homelessness in Reading
About us
We know it’s easy to judge, but there is a real person and a hidden story behind every person who needs our help. Homelessness is complicated. It’s not just about losing a roof from over your head. It’s about losing self-esteem, structure and purpose. Not everyone can draw on a stable upbringing or the support of friends/family to help overcome life’s setbacks. Drug, alcohol, mental health issues, being jobless or losing a job and Reading’s lack of affordable housing makes people vulnerable to homelessness. We provide three services to prevent homelessness in the town: Housing with support. Our own clean, safe housing combined with individual support is the most effective way to get people back on track. Preventing homelessness. Floating Support is the national name for a service that helps prevent homelessness. Launchpad supports single parents, families, couples and individuals to stay in their own homes and help with landlord issues. We also help find appropriate housing for people in unsuitable accommodation such as families in B&Bs. Drop-in. Available to anyone in Reading who needs housing or homelessness-related advice. You could be sleeping on a friend’s sofa, not sure how to find accommodation, worried about rent, need benefit advice or help with drug or alcohol misuse. We can help prevent a problem becoming a crisis. Everyone has their own challenges and our support in the form of help with fundamental and complementary life skills with a safe, clean home gives people the best chance of success: Fundamental life skills. Often our clients need professional help to overcome alcohol and drug misuse. We also help with numeracy and literacy, IT skills, job search and managing mental health issues. Complementary life skills. Our support is holistic. Our activities programme includes counselling, an allotment, beekeeping and art. This may not sound like typical support, but these initiatives really help with self-esteem and confidence.

What a bumper and bountiful time we've had lately at our allotments! Last week we delivered five boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables to ReadiFood Food Bank and we picked another tray up from our friends at Huntley & Palmers allotments as well. A corporate team from Haines Watts helped us out last week and we also have a fab new sign which helps people find our allotments in Woodley. If you work for a company that might be interested in helping on our allotments, please contact Kirsti Wilson, our head of Marketing and Fundraising here at Launchpad. With the number of people requiring the services of Launchpad rising steadily, so too is our need for funding. It's a tough old world out there in fundraising at the moment! Could we please ask that you take a minute to nominate our charity for this Benefact Group grant? It costs you nothing but your time, but this grant could mean the difference between us being able to help that extra person in housing crisis or not. Thanks for your support 😍 https://lnkd.in/e9aXX9VU

🐶 It's been great to see people signing up to the wag-tastic Launchpad Walkies! campaign this week, but we'd still love to see more of you join our army of dog-lovers and take on the challenge of walking 100 miles between now and the 31st of October to support us in our mission to prevent homelessness across Reading. Sign up to this event is just a fiver (around the same as the cost of a fancy cup of coffee), and you'll get an exclusive Walkies bandana for your four-legged friend as well as those all-important bags for any clean-ups (kindly donated by Jollyes-The Pet People). There's no minimum fundraising ask, we just ask that you do your best to raise whatever you can - and remember, the earlier you sign up, the more time you've got to squeeze those miles in! A fun challenge you can do from anywhere, that gives you a chance to get those steps in and support a local charity, what are you waiting for?! 🐕 More details here: https://lnkd.in/eucTvpKa #RgdUk #Reading #Berkshire #dogs #pets #virtualchallenge #walking #fundraising #homelessness
