"As a woman, I, like many other autistic and ADHD women, learnt to mask my traits and so I went undiagnosed for 32 years." October is ADHD awareness month so we'd like to reshare Sonay's story about her journey to an ADHD and autism diagnosis. Sonay's story also highlights how workplaces can support all employees, regardless of whether they have a neurodivergent diagnosis. Please read with care as this story contains potentially triggering content about suicide or suicidal thoughts. #ADHD #ADHDAwarenessMonth #LegalSector #MentalHealthMatters

Following on from last week’s webinar on mental health and wellbeing, where we briefly touched on the importance of cultural fit in maintaining mental health, we thought we’d explore this topic further. Check out our latest article: "Cultural Fit in Law Firm Compliance Roles: Why It Matters for Firms and Candidates Alike." In risk and compliance roles, the right cultural fit not only helps law firms build stronger teams but also ensures that candidates find a workplace where they can thrive and feel supported. A good cultural match can positively impact both professional success and personal wellbeing. This week we’re welcoming a couple of new LawCare Champions. Our Champions support our vision of a legal sector that values good mental health and where people thrive, by committing to work with us to raise awareness and generate opportunities. We’re delighted to have Millie Wallace join us as a LawCare Champion! “I am delighted to become a LawCare Champion to help eradicate the stigma around discussing mental health and wellbeing within a workplace context. As 'corporate athletes' I believe we need to both provide and access as much support as needed to achieve our full potential and bring on the success which will follow. A confidential conversation with LawCare can really help you to get back on track if you are having a wobble or are feeling completely derailed. People just need to know it's available.” Camilla (Millie) is the Senior Partner at Wedlake Bell and is a private client lawyer specialising in tax and estate planning for domestic and international clients. As a trustee and trusted advisor for wealthy families she often encounters sensitive issues which turn on mental health but from a personal perspective, Millie suffered burn out at the start of her career and has experienced alcoholism first hand growing up with an alcoholic mother. She is passionate about well-being in the workplace and believes that real change comes from the top with open and honest dialogue. She believes in valuing EQ as much as we do IQ and often talks about how empathy (whether with clients or colleagues) can improve productivity and in turn profits. LawCare is a small charity, with a very small staff team, so we simply couldn’t manage without our Champions. They amplify the message about why mental health matters and help us to get mental health firmly on the agenda for legal workplaces, organisations and institutions. #Inspiring #Champion #MentalHealthMatters #Lawyers #Ally

“I’d get the brunt of all the initial grief. People were angry, frustrated and devastated: they wanted justice and someone to blame.” Chrissie Wolfe, Partner at Nexa shares her experiences as a legal professional with identifying and managing vicarious trauma: “When I was a clinical negligence trainee, I'd often handle initial enquiries from clients to determine if a case was viable. “I took calls from people who were extremely distressed. Sometimes an accident had just happened and I even had situations where a parent had just lost a child.” Often, legal professionals aren’t equipped to manage vicarious trauma. Chrissie says, “I’d been trained in the law, but I’d never had any training to manage these situations. Chrissie adds, “It’s not just one client you’re dealing with either. You’ve got a caseload of people who are catastrophically injured and often experiencing psychological trauma as a result. "You might be working on a client’s case for three or more years, so you carry that emotion every day. It’s a burden.” It’s important that legal professionals are well-equipped to spot the signs of vicarious trauma and to find coping mechanisms which work for them. This might look different for everyone, from attending therapy to speaking to peers. For Chrissie, therapy has been a useful tool to manage vicarious trauma, she says, “because of therapy, I can show up for my clients in the way that we both need to preserve our mental health.” Read more about managing vicarious trauma in our feature with expert speaker, Mary Jackson, counsellor at LawCare, and Rebecca Wood, partner at Woollcombe Yonge Solicitors LLP: https://ow.ly/rkIy50TLMzB #VicariousTrauma (LawCare - the mental health charity for the legal sector)
