“My story is deeply rooted in my Jamaican heritage. My grandparents were part of the Windrush Generation, migrating to the UK in the 1950s and settling in Nottingham. The values of service and community were instilled in me from a young age. As a Foundation Governor of a school, I continue this legacy, working to ensure that children from disadvantaged backgrounds receive equal access to quality education. My journey to leadership has not been without its challenges. Like many black women, I have faced systemic barriers, often having to work twice as hard to gain half the recognition and passed over for opportunities in favour of those with less experience or qualifications. Yet, my determination and my refusal to be defined by these limitations have led me to succeed at Legal & General, an environment committed to changing this narrative. Here, I’ve emphasised the importance of community in the workplace—recognising that true progress comes when diversity and inclusion are deeply integrated practices. My career has been marked by a drive to create opportunities for others and offer mentorship. As I often say, ‘To move forward, you have to give back.’ Success, in my eyes, is not measured solely by personal accolades but by what I can accomplish for those who come after me. I’m especially mindful of the world my daughter is about to enter. I hope she will be judged by her merits, not her appearance. For me, Black History Month is not a mere box to check—it’s deeply personal. It reminds us that people are not defined solely by their jobs; everyone has a story and something to give.” – Sabrina Operational Resilience Analyst.

Earlier this week, we were delighted to host “The Blacktionary Show” at our London office; an uplifting event where we explored the language of race, its definitions, current applications, and how these translate into the workplace. The event featured Maggie Semple, OBE, FCGI and Jane Oremosu, authors of ‘My Little Black Book: The Blacktionary’, alongside our Chief Client Officer, Sarah Aitken. Attendees received a copy of the book and were invited to engage in dynamic discussions and share lived experiences, highlighting the importance of diversity and informed language in the workplace. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and to Maggie and Jane for such an inspiring and important session.

“I was born in Ghana to Ghanaian-British parents but spent my adolescence in Côte d'Ivoire, a neighbouring francophone country. Growing up, I was surrounded by role models, including my parents and older siblings, who set high standards and nurtured my ambition to succeed. My family taught me the importance of integrity, hard work, and compassion – values which have shaped my outlook on life to this day. Coming from West Africa, where “race” is not a primary identifier, it was not until my arrival in the UK that I became conscious that I was “Black”, and for the first time, I was confronted with negative stereotypes associated with that identity. This strengthened my resolve to write my own story and pursue my goal to become a leader in my chosen discipline - one who is unapologetically authentic and deeply committed to reclaiming those narratives. It’s also no coincidence that I have built a long-standing career at Legal & General, where I have remained not only because of the rich opportunities for professional growth but also because the company fosters a culture where people are encouraged to be authentic. Looking ahead, I envision a future with greater representation of black professionals in senior leadership roles across the industry, where stereotypes and limiting beliefs are increasingly challenged, and everyone is allowed to be seen for who they are. My story is far from over, and I am more committed than ever to making an impact. Embodying the Akan concept of ‘Sankofa’—the idea of returning to one's roots to gather wisdom for the future—I am dedicated to honouring my heritage by helping to build a better future for the next generation.” - Afibah, Chartered Accountant, Finance Transformation Lead. #BlackHistoryMonth

It’s been one year since Greater Manchester Pension Fund joined us as partners, alongside Bruntwood in our joint venture Bruntwood SciTech. It marked the first local government pension scheme to make a direct and active investment into a UK-wide science, tech and innovation specialist property platform, helping to fuel economic growth and positive social impact in the real economy. We are proud of the partnership’s success over the past year helping innovation-led businesses to grow and look forward to what the future holds together.
Since last year’s £500m fundraise, we've made incredible progress in turning our vision of a £5bn portfolio by 2032 into a reality. In our latest video, Bruntwood SciTech CEO Chris Oglesby, Head of Real Estates Kevin Etchells from Greater Manchester Pension Fund, and Laura Mason from Legal & General Capital, discuss how our strategic investments are driving growth and what’s next in our journey to supporting 2,600 businesses. With £314m of investment already underway, we're progressing with 1.45m sq ft of cutting-edge workspace —providing space for the UK’s most ambitious innovation-led businesses to succeed. 📹 Watch to learn more about our continued expansion and development plans, our commitment to supporting the growth of the UK's innovation economy, and the impact we’re making on the UK’s tech, innovation and life sciences sectors.
