Leigh Leopards are delighted to confirm that plans are at an advanced stage to form a Wheelchair team to add to the club’s infrastructure. Leopards now boast an academy and scholarship setup alongside the first team, reserves team, LDRL team and women’s team. Further expansion will see the introduction of a women’s under 19s team in 2026. Wheelchair Rugby League is a wheelchair-based version of the game, one of two recognised disability versions of the sport. First developed in France in 2000 the version of the game has grown in popularity and is now played in more than ten countries. Wheelchair Rugby League allows players without disabilities to compete and the version of the game also allows men and women of any age to compete against one another in top level competition. Spearheaded by Leigh Community Trust, who also oversee the popular and fast growing Leopards LDRL team, it is the club’s intention to play in a development set-up from May 2025 onwards with a view to having a fully fledged wheelchair team from 2026.
