    I’m back at school 📚 and it’s exciting… Yesterday I submitted my first assignment for the “Understanding Autism” course. I am not autistic myself, nor do I think I’m autistic. Sometimes I can be slightly awkward, shy or apprehensive in some social and professional settings (this may be why I have always communicated relatively well with autistic people) but that’s just my slightly introverted personality. I am neurotypical and the reason for doing this course is purely to learn about autism. I want to help autistic people during the recruitment process and in the workplace, if I can. I also want to help employers support autistic people during the recruitment process and in the workplace, if I can. 💭 What have I learned so far? A LOT actually! I’d like to share some points that may help neurotypical people understand autism differently (especially if you don’t know anything at all, like I didn’t). 💛 Autism is not a disability❗ - An autistic person just thinks, behaves, and processes information differently to neurotypical people. There is no right or wrong. 💛 There are varying levels of autism (Level 1, 2 & 3) - This does not mean that some people are “more autistic” than others. - It just means that those diagnosed with L1 Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) will have different needs or require different levels of support to those diagnosed with L2 or L3 ASC. 💛 Not all autistic people are the same. - Traits and characteristics can be displayed differently. Just like neurotypical people have different personality traits, so do autistic people. We are all different. For example: → Some may be able to maintain conversations, some may find this difficult. ↳ Being unable to maintain a conversation does not mean that they are being ignorant or are disinterested in what you are saying. → Some may be able to hold eye contact for a short (or even long) time, some may not. ↳ Lack of eye contact does not mean that they are being rude or are disinterested. → Some may be able to 'mask' stimming (fidgeting, flapping arms, fiddling with objects, foot tapping, etc.), some may not be able to mask/stop it quite so easily. ↳ A person who stims is not trying to be annoying, they are doing this to self-regulate. → Some may be able to adapt to change easier than others. ↳ Routine is important and often needed, and even small changes to routine can cause anxiety. They are not being inflexible. 💛 Not all autistic people have been able to receive a professional diagnosis, particularly adults. - There are long waiting lists, diagnosis complexities, and lack of professional resources. - It is also more difficult to diagnose autism in adults than it is in children. 💚 Next time you interview/hire someone who is (or may be) autistic, please show them some kindness. Listen to their needs. Make their interview/work life more comfortable for them. Try to understand their characteristics and love them for who they are.

    I don't mean to brag but....     This year has been a very different and complex year for me. What many people don't know is that I've actually spent the whole year feeling like such a failure and like I've let myself, my business, and my clients down. I wasn't sure whether I should say that on here... but it's the truth. Without going through all the ins and outs, it's been an emotional and stressful rollercoaster personally that has resulted in me selling my home and leaving Milton Keynes. On Friday last week, I moved back to the lovely English Riviera to be close to family and friends, and I finally feel a little more settled. This week, I took a trip to Bournemouth and Poole to see some clients, and I realise that I haven’t been a failure after all. The comments I received when I saw them were really warming and somehow, despite all the turmoil, I've still managed to do a good job and they're happy with the candidates and service I've delivered. So I want to say a huge THANK YOU to all my clients, not only for your kindness, but for your loyalty. I feel very privileged to have you as clients and I'm looking forward to continuing to support you in the year ahead. Those who I didn't get to see this week - I'm looking forward to seeing you in the new year! As I reflect on the last year, I realise that I've learned such a lot ~ both in business and personally. I've spent all year filling up my bucket of knowledge, which is going to overflow into great things for 2024. 2024 is going to be a fantastic year for Leo Recruitment and I can't wait to get started.     When I'm not recruiting, you can find me hanging upside down! 🙃 I've often joked that when I hang upside down, anything that happened that day or week that didn’t make me feel good, can just fall out of my head and onto the floor 😂 But jokes aside, it actually does! When I do trapeze yoga, I completely switch off and dump any negative energy. It relaxes me and re-focuses my mind. I always find myself being more productive the next day. Being suspended in the air like this is also great for strength, balance and flexibility, and it releases built up tension from your body and mind. What do you do to keep your mind and body healthy? #yoga ------------- This is called the "angel pose", which I could not do a couple of weeks ago so I was pretty chuffed when I cracked it last night 👇 I've also learned how to do handstands whilst being suspended in the air, which is incredible for me because I've never been able to do a handstand 😂

    Time wasters....⏰⏰⏰ People who don't read job adverts properly! Here are some of the common conversations I have when I speak to candidates about their applications: Candidate: "Where is this job located again...?" Me: "Bournemouth" Candidate: "Oh.. no.. that's too far! I live in Aberdeen!" Me: "Are you looking to relocate?" Candidate: "No" 😏 Me: "What salary are you looking for?" Candidate: "£40K" Me: "This position is paying up to £30K" Candidate: "Oh... that's far too low." (Occasionally followed by a smarmy "Good luck with finding someone on that salary!") 😳 After applying for a field engineer role... Me: "The role will involve travelling to customer sites, the company will give you a van." Candidate: "I don't drive..." 🤔 Candidate: "I'm on a graduate Visa so I can only work 20 hours per week during term time." Me: "This role is a full time position." 😑 Me: "What salary are you looking for?" Candidate: "£350 per day - I'm a contractor" Me: "This position is permanent - would you consider a permanent role?"
