On 7 October, we had the honour of welcoming to our #LeonardoBelgium site in #Liège the Ambassador of Italy in Belgium, Federica Favi, who was accompanied by the Economic and Commercial Counselor Isidoro Nigri. The meeting was an important occasion to discuss #Leonardo’s development opportunities in #Belgium, present Leonardo Helicopters’ maintenance and support capabilities, and highlight Leonardo Cyber & Security’s growing role in #Brussels.

We were honoured to welcome our Patron, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal The Royal Family, alongside leading women in STEM and EDI champions at our annual conference to celebrate 40 years of moving the dial towards gender parity in the sector. Her Royal Highness met with our members and conference exhibitors to learn more about our mission to pioneer gender equity. We were delighted to showcase the work we’ve achieved in our 40-year history – as well as demonstrating the dedication and passion from the wider sector to make a real change in ensuring more girls and women find a future in STEM-related careers. We wanted to bring together the STEM industry to inspire and influence organisations and their employees to build an inclusive workplace for women in the sector. We welcomed expert speakers to share their thoughts and experiences across a variety of topics such as allyship, women’s health and inclusive leadership. With 26% of women making up the current STEM workforce this remains the biggest and largest untapped talent pool in the sector – and as the engineering skills deficit widens, we need to increase the pace of change. Dr Laura Norton, WISE Managing Director said: “For over 40 years, WISE has been at the forefront of advancing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the UK, working to achieve gender parity across STEM fields through research, outreach, and collaboration with both organisations and individuals. The joint venture between #Leonardo and Rheinmetall was launched yesterday, with the aim of forming a new European nucleus for the development and production of military combat vehicles in Europe. As our Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Roberto Cingolani explains, “this is a significant step towards the creation of a European defence system based on specialized shared platforms. Rheinmetall and Leonardo aim at developing state-of-the-art technologies able to compete at international level.” The agreement, which follows the Memorandum of Understanding signed last July, is being reported by the international press. Sharing a common vision and explore together the #IRIDE constellation programme, to set the crucial goal of preserving our planet and build a more sustainable one, thanks to #EarthObservation and #Space technologies. This was the purpose of the Global Networking Forum (GNF) Session "Protecting our People and Planet: IRIDE Constellation as a Global Catalyst for Sustainability," taking place on the day 2 of IAC2024. Raffaella Luglini, Leonardo's Chief Sustainability Officer, opened the GNF highlighting the substantial progress to ensure a safe environment for future generations made by the company thanks to the development of new Space and ground technologies. These solutions are at the heart of #Leonardo business, and as underlined by Raffaella Luglini, their positive impact on protecting People and Planet is definitely a fact. Massimo C Comparini, Leonardo’s Space Managing Director, participated in the panel discussion, emphasising IRIDE’s role as a catalyst for sustainable development and innovation. Leonardo and Rheinmetall establish a joint venture aiming at forming a new European nucleus for the development and production of military combat vehicles in Europe. The companies had already signed a corresponding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Rome at the beginning of July 2024. Rheinmetall AG and Leonardo S.p.A. will be equal shareholders (50% each) in the new company Leonardo Rheinmetall Military Vehicles (LRMV), which will have its legal headquarters in Rome and an operational headquarter in La Spezia. The definition of the agreement and the establishment of the company, which will be expected by the first quarter 2025, are subjected to usual regulatory approvals for this sort of operation. The primary goal of the joint venture is the industrial development and subsequent marketing of the new Italian main battle tank (MBT) and the new Lynx platform for the Armoured Infantry Combat System (AICS) programme as part of the Italian Army's programme for land systems. The development and production of other vehicles of this family, such as recovery, engineer and bridge-laying vehicles, is also planned. Both partners also expect their joint products to provide extensive sales opportunities in international markets.
