Search is all about surfacing information. Often, systems are let down by making the information fit to a specific technology. It may be surprising to hear how and where these systems suffer information loss. This is one of the biggest barriers to achieving high quality results, whatever the chosen technology. The first chapter of my latest article on search and research considers where the problems start - the moment a document is published to HTML or PDF and then converted to plaintext. https://lnkd.in/eQPKg6ED Information First vs Technology First Most search technology is designed to expect documents as plaintext. This step often introduces noise and jumbles information, ultimately mis-directing search engines. The step of converting rich documents to plaintext immediately discards all formatting and document structure that humans intuitively use to comprehend documents. This is a significant loss of contextual information. When designing our technology stack we took an 'Information First' approach. Identifying the most important information and ensuring it is preserved through the system. This approach preserves the important contextual detail using document graphs. A side product is that this can be used to produce clean normalised content from PDF & HTML reports. All existing technologies such as traditional search, #VectorSearch, #Chunking, #LLMs, #RAG, #GraphRAG, #HybridRAG greatly benefit when provided with clean, normalised and consistently structured input content.
