LiNa Energy
Appliances, Electrical, and Electronics Manufacturing
LiNa Energy is leading the charge to develop and commercialise low-cost solid state sodium batteries.
About us
LiNa Energy is a developer and provider of low-cost solid state sodium batteries, with a focus on the renewable energy storage market. LiNa Energy was created as a spin-out of Lancaster University, where the founders Dr Gene Lewis and Dr Richard Dawson combined their expertise in ceramics and electrochemistry and applied this to the problem of energy storage. Since then, the company has developed an innovative solid state sodium-based battery technology which offers superior safety and sustainability standards compared to lithium-based batteries. Thanks to its patented design and use of abundant raw component materials, LiNa’s batteries are lower cost to deploy and offer higher performance than lithium-ion alternatives. LiNa Energy is privately held and run by a leadership team comprising the original founders and talent drawn from energy sector and big four consulting firms. If you can’t have a bit of fun in the lab on Halloween, when can you? 🎃👻 Usually when you 3D print, you're working with plastic - great for most things - like this ghoulish build. However, you can’t use most conventional plastics when you're dealing with the high temperatures (250°C+) that our batteries operate at. That’s why we use PEEK, a traditional well-known wonder material with significant thermal stability and chemical compatibility properties. We just wrapped up our impact accelerator program, ‘Project PEEKaboo,’ led by Lancaster University and supported by Victrex. We’ll share more details next week, so keep your eyes peeled 👀. In the meantime, enjoy this Halloween 3D build on repeat - we can’t get enough of it! #3Dprinting #innovation #batterytechnology

👩🔬 Beyond the Lab: The Pets of LiNa Energy 🐕🐈 This week, we’re featuring Dawid Januszkiewicz’s two adorable cats, Brusia and Bella. Dawid and his wife adopted the pair from an animal shelter eight months apart. Despite the gap, Brusia and Bella quickly became inseparable. Now, they’re the best of friends and do almost everything together - especially napping! What a gorgeous pair they are 🐈🐈 #BatteryTechnology #Innovation #OfficePets

🔋Unlocking Battery Innovation: The Power of Data📊 At LiNa Energy, we're not just building batteries - we're building the future of sodium energy storage. While building and testing thousands of cells is vital to our R&D, the real game-changer is how we leverage the vast amounts of data generated in the process. Our in-house developed "data brain" is the key to this acceleration. One standout feature is our 'Cell Passport' tool. With a single click, any team member can access a cell’s performance and see things like: 📈Composition details 📈Builder information 📈Runtime data 📈Live cycling This instant access to detailed cell information empowers our team to make rapid, informed decisions, driving breakthroughs and accelerating our progress in battery technology. #batterytechnology #research #testing #data Duncan Bloemers

Earlier this year Will Tope spoke on a panel at the Energy Tech Summit in Bilbao, Spain. He was on a panel discussing the future of solid-state batteries with Arfa Karani, PhD, Casper Peeters, Yan Zhu and Mike O'Kronley. There were a couple of key issues that were discussed, which remain increasingly important right now ⬇️ 🔀Pathways to Commercialisation Identifying what customers actually want from solid state batteries and the timeframe and pathways to adoption. It's critical to zoom in on a limitation of incumbent tech, and find a partner who finds that weakness very painful. 📈How we nurture transparent and holistic data sharing Avoiding the temptation to rely on isolated KPIs and ensuring we are informing the industry as better informed investors and customers are good for everyone. If you’d like to listen to the recording it’s available here 🎧⬇️ #energytechsummit #innovation #cleantech

👩🔬 Beyond the Lab: The Pets of LiNa Energy 🐕🐈 This week, we’re excited to introduce Aisha Ford’s two feline companions, Coco and Narla - sisters with a classic love-hate relationship! Coco is the ultimate chill queen, finding comfort in bags, boxes, and anywhere but her five beds. Fun fact: she’s half cat, half dog - she loves playing fetch and can’t actually meow! Meanwhile, Narla may look sweet and demure, but don’t be fooled! She’s the alpha of the pair and it's either her way or the highway. She’s also an avid “traveller” - no suitcase can stay open without her hopping right in 😼✈. With personalities like these, we’re not sure the lab could handle all that energy and mischief! #officepets #batterytechnology #cleantech

👩🔬🔬Update from the Lab: LiNa Energy Short-Circuit Safety Test - Resilience Under Extreme Conditions 🔬👩🔬 When developing energy storage solutions, particularly for longer durations, high C-Rates (the rate at which a battery charges or discharges relative to its capacity) usually aren’t the focus. However, in a recent test, we pushed our cells beyond 3C during a series of short-circuit safety tests - and did so without the typical fireworks. ⚡What is a Battery Short Circuit? In simple terms, a short circuit happens when there's an unintended connection between the positive and negative terminals, allowing current to flow uncontrollably. In traditional lithium-ion batteries, this can result in overheating, venting, or even explosions, as the high currents create extreme internal temperatures. 🔋The LiNa Energy Test To assess the resilience of our Gen 1 (3.2Ah) cells, we conducted short-circuit tests at 90% State of Charge (SOC) in a 250°C controlled environment. Using a load of 80 ± 20 mOhm (via a TTI LD400 DC) and heavy-gauge, nickel-cored cables resistance-welded directly to the anode and cathode. The result? A sustained shorting current of around 9-10A for 10 minutes - unintentionally setting a new C-Rate record for our cells. 🚫🔥Zero Fire, Zero Smoke—100% Integrity Despite extreme conditions, our cells showed no physical damage, smoke, or fire - proving the inherent safety of LiNa Energy's technology, even in the event of a short circuit. 🧠Why It Matters Safety is critical when it comes to battery design. By eliminating traditional safety risks, we simplify system architecture, reduce the need for extra safety equipment, and lower the overall cost of energy storage systems. At LiNa Energy, our commitment to safety drives innovation, and these results support our approach to building the next generation of energy storage solutions. #EnergyStorage #Innovation #Safety #BatteryTech
