The Spiritual Home of Scotch Whisky
About us
The Spiritual Home of Scotch Whisky. Revived after 523 years. Lindores Abbey’s widely recognised links to the earliest written reference to Scotch Whisky, mean that people have been travelling to this quiet corner of Fife for centuries. After a 500-year break, these whisky pilgrims are now once again able to see Single Malt distillation happening once again on this historic site. In 2017, spirit started flowing once again from copper stills at Lindores Abbey. OUR STORY Learning as much as we can from the great Scottish distillers around us, past and present, and from others much further afield, we are looking forward to bringing a very modern whisky-making approach to this ancient site. The distillery was created by converting and enlarging the old Abbey farm steading, which was built from original Abbey stone. The glass-fronted stillroom looks directly out over the Abbey grounds. WHISKY MAKING The water for our whisky comes from a borehole near the distillery, in order that we can draw from the same supply used in 1494. The barley is grown on our land, malted and then mashed in a conventional, semi-lauter tun supplied by renowned distillery fabricators, Forsyths of Rothes. Fermentation is happening in traditional wooden washbacks, supplied by Joseph Brown of Dufftown. We have three Forsyths copper pot stills, one large wash still and two smaller spirit stills, which allows greater copper contact in the final distillation, creating a clean and delicate flavour in the spirit. A LONG-HELD DREAM The Lindores Abbey Farm was bought by Drew McKenzie Smith’s grandfather in 1913. Like his father before him, Drew now holds the title of ‘Custodian of Lindores’. Along with his wife, Helen, Drew spent two decades tirelessly researching, planning and campaigning to bring a distillery back to the grounds of Lindores Abbey.

Do you drink like a girl? If so, could you let us know what means? Because we don't think there's much difference between how lads and lassies drink and we want to give that stereotype the boot! That's why, this International Women's Day we're hosting a female-led tasting exclusively for women. You don't have to be a seasoned whisky drinker, in fact, you don't have to have ever tried whisky before. This tasting is a perfect introduction to the spirit of Scotland. You'll be guided through a flight of drams by our Blender, all specifically selected as a welcoming and pleasant introduction to whisky drinking. We'll give you insight into how our whisky is made and different things that influence the flavours of the spirit. This is a ticketed event and all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to OurWhisky Foundation, a non-profit organisation recognising, supporting and empowering women working in whisky around the world. Tickets are £25 per person and include all drams and light refreshments. Book here: https://buff.ly/4aKe4qr or at the Distillery! #LindoresAbbey #Distillery #InternationalWomensDay #WhiskyTasting #Whisky #Women #Fife #Scotland

If you could share a dram with anyone, past or present, who would you sit down with? 🥃 And what dram would you pour? (yes, there is a correct answer for this part 👀) #whisky #distillery #question #pastorpresent #singlemalt #scotch #scotland

Lindores Abbey Distillery reposted this
Looking back on 2024, I had the privilege to visit quite a few Distilleries. A major highlight there was Lindores Abbey Distillery, considered the spiritual home of Scotch whisky. Although this post is a bit overdue, the memories of that day remain vivid. A heartfelt thank you to Dean McDonald for introducing their exquisite whiskies and to Matthew Hastie for being a wonderful guide navigating the group through the distillery and its surroundings with a rich heritage. His insights into the rich history of the abbey were truly enlightening. We were warmly welcomed by HELEN MCKENZIE SMITH, whose hospitality added a special touch to our visit. Meeting Vesper - one of their friendly mascot cats was also a delightful surprise, though I missed meeting the other cat - Friar John Claw. Tasting a variety of drams such as the Thiron, their new make spirit, and Aqua Vitae, was a highlight. Their Single Malt Scotch Whisky MCDXCIV was a personal favourite. Concluding the tour with a conversation with Distillery Manager Gary Haggart provided deeper insights into their craftsmanship. Another particular highlight is how the history and shape of the pillars of the abbey inspired them to create their unique bottle designs! Lindores Abbey's commitment to reviving centuries-old traditions while innovating in whisky production is truly commendable. The distillery's location on the historic site of Lindores Abbey, adds a profound sense of heritage to the experience. For anyone passionate about whisky and history, a visit to Lindores Abbey Distillery is definitely recommended, as it is an enriching journey into Scotland's distilling heritage. P.S. This place is dog friendly! Be sure to check out the Lindogs gallery notice board of all dog pictures! #LindoresAbbeyDistillery #ScotchWhisky #DistilleryTour #WhiskyTasting #ScotlandSpirits

We're desperate for someone to create an award for the dog friendliest distillery, because we have no doubt we'd take top spot 🐾 You can always be guaranteed a warm welcome, but if you bring along your canine companions, you'll be guaranteed an EXTRA warm welcome as our staff are all dog lovers 😍 Don't forget that dogs can go anywhere humans can, this means they can join you for our full distillery tour and our history tours as well. We've got plenty of water stops, biscuits and space for a good game of fetch! ⚽ #LindoresAbbey #Distillery #Whisky #DogFriendly #SingleMalt #Scotch #Scotland
