UNESCO and UNICEF'S recent report underscores the crucial role of parents and caregivers in early childhood development, heralding them as "children’s first teachers". The report calls for a whole-of-society approach, parental support and family-friendly policies to improve children’s early learning experiences. At Lively Minds, we are dedicated to supporting parents and caregivers in their essential role as their children's first teachers. Our Lively Minds Together radio programme provides them with valuable guidance on educational games and activities they can engage in with their children at home, along with lessons on nutrition and handwashing. Yesterday, I had the honor of representing Lively Minds as a panelist at the Gender and Growth Gaps in Sub-Saharan Africa conference in Accra, hosted by the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) in partnership with Yale University Economic Growth Center and Yale Inclusion Economics. It was an enriching experience discussing "Gender and Power: From Households to Institutional Structures" alongside distinguished panelists such as Honorable Williametta Saydee-Tarr, former Gender Minister of Liberia, Gifty Volimkarime from CEED, and Dr. Akosua Darkwah from the University of Ghana. During my presentation, I highlighted the mindset barriers that women face which prevent them from achieving their full potential, and emphasized the critical need to invest in initiatives that empower women and prepare them for opportunities. The feedback from participants was incredibly encouraging: "You delivered excellently. It's great to know you are working on the mindset of the women. It will make a lot of impact. And then you spoke about women being prepared before the opportunities show up, and that was a very great point. Thanks for the good work you are doing." I am deeply grateful for the positive feedback and remain committed to advocating for and working towards the empowerment of women. Together, we can create an environment where every woman has the chance to thrive and lead. The Ghana Education Service-Lively Minds programme teaches Mothers in rural communities how to support early learning at home. This includes playing games with children in schools using participatory, child-led and turn-taking methods. The educational games are designed to encourage the children to think creatively, to solve problems and to question. And of course to help build resilience, as they try again until they have found the answer. As these are fun, the children do not even realise that they are learning!

As our celebration of #InternationalDayofPlay continues, we are proud to highlight our ongoing partnership with the Government of Ghana 🤝 Together, the Ghana Education Service-Lively Minds programme reaches 101,173 parents and 219,489 children in 2820 communities in northern Ghana 🛣 🧒🏾 🔢 Today, we were recognised by the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, alongside other organisations working towards quality pre-primary care and education in Ghana. Let's keep striving towards a world where children learn, grow and thrive through play.
