Liverpool BID Company are proud to have supported today’s Parliamentary Reception with Downtown in Business & partners. You can read our statement on today’s budget announcement below: Growth is something we have to fight for, the increase in spending on vital projects and to improve public spending is always something business should welcome. Investment in people and places is exactly what we need and this is a prudent approach. We need to be cautious that the burden doesn’t fall on those small and medium size businesses that help our cities to flourish. One in five people in this country is employed by an SME, they are the backbone of our economy. We are going to have to sit down and see how we can support them to ensure the increases in their taxes and spending are able to be realised. Although the increasing cap on taxes means our smallest businesses will have more room to breathe, we know that our High Streets are the focal point of our communities and we need a sustained strategy to help them succeed. The 40% relief on business rates for retail and hospitality is welcome, up to a cap of £110,000 per business, but we don’t want to risk pushing this issue into the long grass. And it still means that many businesses will see their rates double in April. Business rates need solid reform, so we will be pressing the government to focus on this over the next two years to have a workable solution that provides equity for bricks and mortar and online businesses. In terms of infrastructure, we need a greater focus and support for connectivity to Liverpool. Growth can’t stop at Manchester, it has to go all the way along the roads and the rail to Liverpool. We’ll be taking the concerns of business to the Mayor and MPs to ensure their voices are heard. As we face the last, crucial quarter of the year, we hope that people feel they have a bit more money in their pocket and feel confident to go out and enjoy what our vibrant cities have to offer. #Budget2024 #LiverpoolBusiness #LiverpoolBIDCompany Bill Addy Nigel B.
