The Government's White Paper on devolution in England talks about unitary councils, but what is a unitary authority? Unitary authorities are a single tier of local government responsible for all local services in an area. They may cover a whole county, part of a county or a large town or city. For example, Cornwall Council, Nottingham City Council and Reading Borough Council are all unitary councils. Large urban areas may have a unique form of unitary authorities called metropolitan councils, such as Oldham or Doncaster. London boroughs are also unitary authorities. #LocalGov #Devolution #LGR

We are the national voice of local government
About us
The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national voice of local government. We work with councils to support, promote and improve local government. We are a politically-led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils so they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems. We are a membership organisation. Our core membership comprises 331 of the 333 councils in England and includes district, county, metropolitan and unitary authorities along with London boroughs and the City of London Corporation. The 22 Welsh unitary councils are in membership via the Welsh Local Government Association. We also operate an Associate scheme for organisations whose purpose and objectives are aligned with our own. Our Associates include fire and rescue authorities, police, fire and crime commissioners/police and crime commissioners, national park authorities and town and parish councils via the National Association of Local Councils (NALC)’s corporate associate membership.

LGA Chair Cllr Louise Gittins giving evidence to the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee today on English devolution: "We still need greater clarity on that interaction between local government and the new strategic authorities and what role they play, and actually the Greater Manchester model and the work that Tracy's doing in West Yorkshire particularly in Greater Manchester where council leaders have got an area of responsibility, so for example Councillor Bev Craig who's leader on Manchester leads on growth for whole of the combined authority working with those council leaders. "We are place-makers at a local level." #Devolution #LocalGov
