In the Tokyo Olympic Games, Simone Biles was heavily criticised after she pulled out of multiple events because of a mental block.
This mental block, known among gymnasts as ‘twisties’ causes an athlete to lose a sense of where their body is in space. Simone noticed this in the first few events and pulled out because she realised how dangerous this can be - competing without being in-sync with your mind. For a game such as gymnastics - which involves dangerous manoeuvres - losing a sense of where your body is while in the air - can result in career-ending injuries or death.
For an athlete of Simone’s calibre whom a lot of people came to watch cement her status as the greatest gymnast of all time, there was the mental pressure to continue. But, she did the right thing, listened to her body and pulled out to the dismay of a lot of persons.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics, she made a phenomenal comeback, dazzling everyone and vaulting her way to gymnastic immortality.
With 11 Olympic medals, she has the most Olympic medals by a US gymnast and is the second most-decorated female Olympic gymnast. Globally, she is widely considered the greatest gymnast of all time.
Simone’s mental block is similar to what a lot of employees experience at certain periods in their careers. Some of these period come with so much lull, fatigue, non-productivity and anxiety. Some of these are classical symptoms of work-burnout and if you are going through it, think about taking a time out to re-calibrate.
