Once a grade 2 listed department store, the Arding & Hobbs building has been given a new life. Modular systems are transforming how we design and create outdoor spaces. But at what cost? Modular systems offer flexibility, sustainability, and efficiency, revolutionizing the way outdoor spaces are designed and built. They adapt seamlessly to any project, whether it’s a rooftop garden or a sprawling urban redevelopment. But are there trade-offs? How can we ensure these systems enhance design without compromising creativity or aesthetic integrity? Explore the balance between tried and tested methodologies and creative design — and how modular design can empower architects to create bold, functional spaces that stand the test of time. #LandscapeArchitecture #ModularDesign #SustainableDesign

Integrating accessories within a raised planter edge can enhance user experience and innovatively increase the usability of a space. A wireless phone charger built into the edge, concealed sockets or inset lighting units creating a soft ambience after dark. We've even seen place names and way markers included within the design. These additions and features transform spaces into truly interactive environments and the possibilities are virtually limitless, offering further creative opportunities. Tower Works is a fantastic addition to the Leeds skyline, now with two roof terrace areas for residents... The overarching design concept seeks to frame the historic, grade II listed towers - the Giotto Tower, Verona Tower, and Engine House. The project saw two redefined rooftop gardens and a vibrant public realm regeneration. Associate at OOBE Bettina Lukacs said: "The landscape design seamlessly ties with the site's rich industrial heritage, respecting its history while encouraging contemporary use. The materials and layout subtly reference the heritage of Tower Works, blending the old with the new to create a cohesive, inviting environment that pays homage to the site's past." Collaboration was key in bringing this space to life. Between the teams, the dialogue focused on solutions that not only met aesthetic goals but also adhered to functional needs and sustainability criteria. English Oak carries a legacy of tradition and craftsmanship. Its soft golden hues and gently undulating grain patterns evoke timeless natural beauty. In this short video, Joe takes a closer look at the use of this beautiful material in landscape architecture. Looking to incorporate timber into your design? Choosing the most suitable species can be challenging, and sustainability concerns must be considered. However, when done right, timber makes an exceptional addition to the landscape.

Pleased to share some images of the revitalised Chimney Walk public realm. It's a really beautiful space... Chimney Walk is the vibrant community hub that connects the different areas of the Sugar House Island development. This space brings pedestrian-friendly areas together with nature. It is a conversation between the bustling inner city and the calm influence of the planting. The design team at Planit created these spaces utilising wall-mounted timber seating elements for added functionality and connection and large-scale planting sections. Around 5 years ago, we challenged everything we knew about timber. We put our heads together because we were processing hundreds of tons of timber every month. The spaces that were getting produced were amazing, but at what cost? Our question was simple: ‘Is there a way for timber to be sustainable?' It's a bit of a buzzword, so we broke it down. There’s no simple answer to timber sustainability. Yet, it can be simplified. Here’s the framework we established for choosing a timber species—six simple questions. Suitability of the Timber: 1. Durability (will it last?) 2. Availability (is there sufficient supply?) 3. Cost (will this fit in with the project's budget?) Then came sustainability… 1. Carbon Miles (how far from forest to project?) 2. Life Cycle (tree age vs project lifetime) 3. Environmental (what is the effect on the forest of removing the trees? Habitat etc.) Did this solve the issue? Not entirely. Do the challenges around deforestation and timber sustainability still need attention? Certainly. But if sustainability and the health of our planet is part of every project conversation, we're on our way to more environmentally beneficial project outcomes. Projects that leave legacies, not footprints. #sustainability #design #ourworld #landcapearchitecture
