London Borough of Camden

Government Administration

A truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking!

About us

Camden has a proud, rebellious spirit that throughout its history has seen communities come together to tackle problems, and to bring about real social change. Our Camden 2025 community vision sets out a vision for the future of the borough, where everyone contributes to achieving a safe, fair, creative and active community. We want to make Camden a better borough – a place where everyone has a chance to succeed and where nobody gets left behind. Together, we will create a place that works for everyone, and where everybody has a voice. We want our staff to share our level of ambition and hold our values, as our staff will be key to delivering Our Camden Plan. These values mean we will make sure we put citizens at the heart of everything the organisation does and make sure that we focus on addressing the inequalities that can hold people back. We want Camden Council to be a great place to work that champion’s equality, including a commitment to initiatives like the London Living Wage, which help to make our community a fairer place. A vital part of this is ensuring we are a truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking. By doing this, we will ensure we continue to represent our communities to the best of our ability and deliver our ambitions for Camden. We will continue our development as an agile council, where flexible working brings benefits for staff and for our work. We prize collaborative approaches and working across traditional boundaries.

We are delighted to announce that last year’s annual public health report has been selected as a national winner in the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH) Annual Report Celebration 2024 🎉 🎉 🎉   Each year, every Director of Public Health publishes an independent annual report focusing on a health and wellbeing issue affecting local communities. Camden’s 2023 report focused on adolescent health and the issues that young people are facing in the borough.   The report was coproduced by Camden Youth: Tell Them, a group of local young people aged 16-21, who explored the report data and then worked with an illustrator to show the key findings in the form of a graphic novel called Step into Our Shoes. The young people were paid the London Living Wage for their time, their travel expenses were reimbursed and they are working towards a project management qualification equal to a GCSE 9-6.   Camden Youth: Tell Them were proud of their win, telling us "It’s such an honour to have won a national award. We’re all incredibly proud of bringing awareness to the problems that young people in Camden face and standing up for this underrepresented group."   Camden Youth: Tell Them are now working on a coproduced campaign to signpost young people to healthcare services in Camden, which will launch in September. Camden STEAM has teamed up with world-leading companies and institutions - such as Google, AstraZeneca, Digital Catapult and UCL - to deliver work experience placements for over 400 Year 12 students across our borough. Organised by Camden Learning’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) team, the work experience programme aims to provide local students with hands-on experience at a range of top employers across the borough and help young people gain key skills needed to help them in a future career. Research suggests that young adults who have had engagement with the workplace as teens can earn higher wages in the future. With the support of Camden businesses, institutions and schools, Camden STEAM continues to break barriers, preparing Camden's diverse youth for the careers of tomorrow. Councillor Marcus Boyland, Cabinet Member for Best Start for Children and Families said: 💬 "Camden STEAM’s work experience programme is a brilliant way of connecting young people to the many world-leading companies we have in the borough, playing a significant role in shaping the futures of the participating students and supporting them to learn more about Camden's thriving STEAM economy." Thank you to all 32 employers who participated in the STEAM Work Experience programme! We'd love to hear your stories - comment and share below! At peak times, 40,000 people visit Camden High Street - this is roughly the same as the average matchday attendance for a Premier League football match! We want to make sure all these people can comfortably and safely visit this iconic street. What's more, we want to make sure their visit is memorable. That's why we're proposing to create a motor traffic-free zone as a trial to give more space to locals and visitors. Not only would this make it safer to walk, wheel and cycle around Camden Town, but it would allow us to host cultural activities that celebrate Camden's unique culture and history. You can play a role in shaping what this people-first Camden High Street could look like by sharing your views on our proposals and providing ideas of how we can improve the new public space. 🖱 Visit our consultation website for more information and to complete our survey: https://lnkd.in/ds4XNZ2u

🌟 A huge thank you to the amazing team of volunteers from Mulalley, Savills, Clearcast, Anthesis Group, REVOLT, Camden Climate Alliance and the Council, who came together to ‘tidy up’ the Three Fields Estate in Regent’s Park. 🌟 We sanded and painted 200 metres of railings and 50 bollards, transformed the community hall garden and collected all of the litter on the estate. We’d also like to say a special thank you to Mulalley for their integral support in making the day happen 🙌🏼 💬 One resident told us: “I’m so grateful for what you’re doing here, it’s really making a difference and brightening the estate up.” This ‘tidy up’ is one of many happening across our estates, led by our brilliant partner Think & Do Camden 🌿 If you would like your company to get involved in volunteering at future projects, we would love to hear from you. 📧 Contact us at WeMakeCamden@camden.gov.uk

📰 In partnership with Islington Council, we have just finished a two year externally funded project looking at how we plan and deliver greening within our streets to help address the challenges of extreme weather and unequal access to green space. This means we’re better placed to help mitigate climate change and deliver excellent new green space for residents. A key part of the project was about developing capacity, not just in our organisations, but also sharing what we’ve learnt. The documents are being hosted on the UDL website to help share the learning from the project which can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eyuDxVRG 💬 Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for a Sustainable Camden, commented: "The programme and guidance documents will help to unlock the potential within the council for delivering excellent, multi-functional, climate resilient streets, and address the multiple challenges we face as a borough and city from a changing climate.” We’d like to thank everybody who attended the launch event at Camley Street Natural Park, as well as the speakers Paul Dodd and Sophie Thompson. Another big thank you to all the people and organisations that contributed to the training sessions and case studies. A final thank you to the teams that supported the project Urban Design Learning, LDA Design, Arup, and our project funders Future Parks and the Mayor of London. 📺 Watch our video to find out more! ⬇ #Camden #Islington #LondonCouncils #GreenStreets #GreenSpace

📣 We have officially launched our Carers Action Plan! The plan was approved at Monday’s Full Council meeting, following a moving debate which highlighted the challenges faced by unpaid carers and the need for better support. Developed alongside carers and local carer services, the action plan aims to: 🔹 Highlight actions for services to work together to enable change for all types of unpaid carers 🔹 Identify more carers in the borough and improve access to support In addition to the launch, a free exhibition titled ‘What does caring mean to you?’ is running at Pancras Square Library. It showcases artwork created by carers to offer a glimpse into their thoughts and experiences. 💬 Councillor Anna Wright, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing & Adult Social Care, said: “We know the challenges that unpaid carers face, giving up their time and taking on additional responsibilities to support a family member, friend, or someone who they know would struggle without extra help. “Many people in the borough may not recognise that they are an unpaid carer, or may be missing out on much-needed support for their caring role. The Carers Action Plan is our commitment to recognising these dedicated individuals and their vital contributions to caring for others. “We will continue to listen to their experiences and work with our health and social care partners to connect with more carers and ensure they are getting the support they need.” 🔎 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eCuTtuj5
