The voice of cyclists in London, working to create a better city since 1978

About us

WHO WE ARE The London Cycling Campaign (LCC) represents the interests of those who cycle in the capital and those who want to. Member-led, we have 20,000 supporters of whom 12,000 are paying members. Our vision for London is a city where people of all ages and abilities can cycle safely and enjoyably, and we believe that making cycling the number one transport choice for everyday local journeys will generate immense quality of life, environmental, health and economic benefits for everyone. We campaign for London’s political leaders and decision-makers to remove the barriers that prevent people benefiting from the freedom and convenience that cycling brings, including by developing and proposing our own innovative solutions. We also work in partnership with businesses, local authorities, community groups, schools and other institutions to directly promote cycling at the grass roots and across all London’s communities. OUR VISION Our vision is to transform our city into a healthier, greener and happier place to live, where anyone who wants to cycle can do so safely and enjoyably. OUR MISSION The London Cycling Campaign: • Campaigns to make cycling safe and inviting for everyone • Supports our 12,000 members • Runs projects to promote cycling to and for everyone THE VALUES UNDERPINNING OUR CAMPAIGNING We believe in: • A better London - one that that is freed from over-reliance on motor vehicles and whose neighbourhoods and places are safer, greener, healthier and more vibrant as a result. • A globally-sustainable London – one that plays its full role in averting climate change and preserving the global environment and the Earth’s natural resources for the benefit of future generations. • The power of voluntary organisations to advise decision-makers and hold them to account, and to deliver change at the grassroots. • Diversity and equality, promoting both within the charity and across our work.

We need to talk about bike theft. 6 in 10 people who have a bike stolen cycle less often, or stop altogether. 80,000 bikes are stolen in London every year. London Cycling Campaign are working with ABUS Security Tech Germany to tackle bike theft. We want more resources for the Met Police to take this issue seriously - this is theft of vital transport, not a toy. We've produced a resource here about how to protect your bike against theft: https://lnkd.in/ePax69yk You want to invest 10-20% of the value of your bike in locks, and your main lock should be at minimum Sold Secure Silver rated. We've made a video on how *not* to lock your bike - all using examples from within a 10 minute radius of a central London station. There are a lot of badly-locked bikes out there, so spread the word and let's not make it easy for thieves. https://lnkd.in/e44MYrwN We've spoken to BBC News London about the rise in violent bike theft https://lnkd.in/eMeERK4w And here's our 30 second demonstration of how to lock - send it to a friend who might need to know... https://lnkd.in/eCn4R-GN And remember, you can claim a free ABUS Security Tech Germany D-lock and cable (Gold Sold Secure rated) when you join London Cycling Campaign as a new individual or household member by Direct Debit. Already a member? Refer a friend & you'll both get a lock. https://lnkd.in/e6MJSKVs

Every day London is changing for the better thanks to volunteers like Toby. There is no London Cycling Campaign without you. Thank you.

I had a great time today volunteering with London Cycling Campaign, helping to spread the word and connect with fellow cyclists. 🚴♂️ London Cycling Campaign works to make our streets safer, greener, and more inclusive by advocating for improved cycling infrastructure, cleaner air, and sustainable transport solutions across the city. Their mission is to create a healthier, more liveable London for everyone. Even while balancing part-time work and studies, it's incredibly fulfilling to volunteer for a cause that’s shaping the future of our urban environment. #CyclingAdvocacy #SustainableCities #Volunteering #LondonCycling

🙌 A big LCC thank you to Mike and Sanal for their brilliant fundraising efforts for this year's London to Brighton! "The ride was a huge amount of fun and there was a really nice camaraderie between the riders. My favourite moment was probably hearing a woman play ‘I like to move it, move it’ on her Bluetooth speaker while riding along - that certainly increased my cadence! "The worst bit of the ride was filtering in and out of traffic in Brighton on the way to the finish line - a real reminder of the importance of high quality cycling infrastructure of the sort which LCC continue to fight for."- Mike "It's a very different ride to what I have done before. Long uphill sections and the corresponding downhills. "Ditchling Beacon is a mountain, after 45 miles of cycling, even pushing the bike up for the best of a part of a mile is hard going. Overall I loved it. Looking forward to next year." - Sanal 🖥️ Thank you both, and if you want to get involved in future fundraising opportunities, sign-up to our newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eNA_32_w

Share The Joy Fund round 2 is open now! https://lnkd.in/e8mhAgEE This £100,000 community cycling fund in partnership with Lime x LOUD MOBILITY x London Cycling Campaign is here to help you share the joy of cycling. 🔧 Barny used it to help train unemployed local residents into expert mechanics - like Alejandro, (pictured 1) now employed with top bike brand and workshop Balfe's Bikes. Barny (pictured 2) said: "The Share the Joy fund let us offer a wraparound service to our participants. They receive a qualification and work experience, but more importantly, find community and friendship. This is especially important to those who've struggled with their mental health and social isolation. “Participants walk away after their time with us with a new sense of purpose and find meaningful and fulfilling full-time employment elsewhere. Magic!" ⭐ Wheels For Wellbeing (pictured 3) used their Share the Joy grant to expand their events this summer: “So many people don’t realise that they could cycle, given the right cycle and the right support and encouragement! It has been wonderful to be able to take our cycles out to events organised by other community groups, and to reach new people.” 🚲💻✏️ The grant covers core costs, project costs, or new equipment. How could it help you? Deadline for Round 2 applications is 11pm Sunday 10 November 💚 Find out more & apply now https://lnkd.in/e8mhAgEE

Huge news - Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and Deputy PM Angela Rayner are bringing back plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street. We challenged the Mayor to think big and deal with the traffic mess that is the West End right now. The original plans from 2017 (Conservative Government) got ditched when the local Conservative-run Westminster council turned on it. These new powers will put Oxford Street into the Mayor's control so pedestrianisation actually happens! The West End should be for people, not for cars. "Why stop here? Let's make the whole West End car free." ~ Tom Fyans Think Paris and Rue De Rivoli - and even closer to home, places like Covent Garden, Seven Dials, Carnaby Street. We'll also be pushing for safe, very high quality parallel routes so that people wanting to cycle east-west without stopping can do so safely and easily. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eA5VhWzu

✊ We need better pay & conditions for cycle instructors A cycling instructor since 2018, Mariam Draaijer, CEO of Joyriders Britain shares her experiences of teaching Londoners to ride in a recent issue of London Cyclist magazine. "Cycling instructors are a small but mighty workforce within London’s cycling community, not just teaching Bikeability in schools, but also helping adults to become confident on their bikes. "However, something which I wasn’t aware of when I set out on my teaching journey were the poor working conditions for many instructors." "For example, for every one-to-one session you do with London’s biggest provider, it often results in up to an hour’s extra unpaid admin work... Many cycling instructors haven’t received a pay rise in over 10 years.” 🔗 Check out Mariam's full column on our website: https://lnkd.in/eubx43GG Don't forget, you can get the London Cyclist magazine delivered to your door free with LCC membership. News, rides, features, reviews and more, published every quarter. IWGB - Independent Workers Union of Great Britain #londoncyclingcampaign #londoncycling #cycleinstructor #cycleinstructorlife

We're seriously concerned by Westminster Council going back on their pledge for any cycling infrastructure by 2026. With this in mind, we have penned the following open letter to Westminster City Council... To Cllr Adam Hug, Leader of Westminster City Council, and Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg, Cabinet Member for City Management and Air Quality Before the May 2022 elections, you pledged to build a high-quality cycle network across the City if Westminster Labour won. It’s been over two years now. Where are the cycleways? There was a promising start in 2022 with an announcement of £35m in active travel, and three consultations for good quality, safe cycleway infrastructure. We were pleased to see that these all received broad support from the public. But rather than get on and build them, we’ve seen delay after delay after delay. History teaches us that progress on active travel always faces opposition from a loud minority. But good leadership presses ahead with healthy street schemes, giving clear evidence-based reasons for doing so. Invariably, after these schemes are built and bedded in, they are demonstrably well-used and popular. We question whether by 2026, a City Of Westminster scheme will have delivered a single completed protected cycleway. We fear that you will not have delivered on this pledge either, when you next face the electorate. To view our open letter in full: https://lnkd.in/gK9N8VAg
