About us
Low Carbon Materials (LCM) is a climate-tech company servicing the green construction sector. Science-based and purpose-driven, LCM works closely with construction partners to develop innovative, sustainable, and carbon-negative/low-carbon building materials. LCM has won a series of awards, including The Earthshot Prize Finalist in the 'Fix Our Climate' category, in recognition of its innovative, waste-based aggregate - OSTO. LCM's flagship product, OSTO, is a carbon-negative aggregate designed to replace traditional aggregates in the production of concrete. Concrete has a significant carbon footprint, contributing 8% of CO2 emissions globally*, however, with building material innovation and new material application, this figure can be hugely reduced - concrete can be made carbon neutral by utilising LCM's OSTO in concrete mixes. The company, a spin-out from Durham University, was founded by three Ph.D. students, Dr. Natasha Boulding, Dr. Phil Buckley, and Scott Bush. Both Dr. Boulding and Mr. Bush have been recognised by Forbes 30 Under 30 2023. To find out more contact sales@lowcarbonmaterials.com

Great to speak at the Constructing Excellence in the North East Smart Construction event about how innovation is already unlocking sustainable construction in live projects up and down the UK. The conference and exhibition aimed to raise awareness of best practices of innovation in construction within the region and beyond. So, it was a privilege to be invited to talk about our cutting-edge solutions being used at the local and national levels to reduce carbon emissions. I stressed the importance of first-movers who are eager to adopt innovative products and tools, as they provide the vital foundation for scaling companies with groundbreaking solutions to accelerate their impact. In the case of Low Carbon Materials (LCM), these include Durham County Council, MGL Group, London Borough of Redbridge, Kenson Highways, National Highways, Skanska and Tarmac to name a few! Smart Construction 2024 also featured insights from other key innovators from across the North East sharing their expertise, including Graham Kelly from Okana, Tommy Cooke from Buildots, Ash Curzon of XYZ Reality, David Hughes of Material Evolution, Fernando De los Rios and Henry UNTERREINER of Hyperion Robotics and Ruth Watson of Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB. Thanks to the CENE team for having me and hosting such an informative and engaging event!
