Less than 6 weeks to go until the Boston marathon 😬🇺🇸 Delighted to be raising money for Head For Change and I'm immensely grateful for all the donations so far!! 🙏 The charity does sterling work to support ex sports people who are living with neurodegenerative diseases as a result of their playing days. Any donations, no matter how small, would be very gratefully received by the team. Link in the comments. Sport is amazing on so many levels, we just need to make it safer. Alix Popham, Melanie Bramwell-Popham, Sally Tucker, Warwick Clews P.S. Their merch is excellent if you'd rather support that way 👌

I absolutely loved my time at Uppingham School and thoroughly enjoyed chatting all things entrepreneurship with a bunch of super bright sixth formers at LSE Generate this afternoon. It's awesome to see how exposure to tech and startups is being prioritised by schools! Also great to reconnect with a familiar face, Sam Dewhurst. We're delighted that we'll be welcoming an OU as an intern this summer. Uppingham truly is a school for life.

  • Super insightful article by Alex Bywater in the Daily Mail about how AI is being used to help manage the head injury problem in rugby. Little shout-out to Luca Health as well 💪 👇👇

Expanding on our video insight into the recent 'Ahead of the Game' event hosted by Sam Peters and Alison Kervin OBE. Our Co-Founder Nick Greenhalgh recently spoke at the inaugural 'Ahead of the Game' event hosted at St Paul's School. The speakers and guests at the event included the esteemed Sir Clive Woodward, Mike Loosemore, Cath Bishop, Dr Lisa Ryan (RNutr), Sam Smith,Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Bill Ribbans, Neil Rollings, David Bartlett and Professor Willie Stewart. The evening was a fantastic success featuring three engaging and compelling panels discussing the problems with sport, the purpose of sport and the future of sport. Nick spoke to the audience on the third panel centred around the 'Future of Sport' which featured key themes such as the welfare of young people in sport, experiences with concussion in today's sporting world and how to make sport a safer space for the future. Our values at Luca shone through consistently. Not least the absolute need to 'empower' schools and their staff to make smart decisions regarding pupil welfare. This comes in a landscape where raising awareness that there is a concussion problem is not enough. There is also a clear, shared recognition that the provisions available in the professional game are not shared with grassroots and school sport. Hence, there is a pressing need to develop technologies and services that are accessible right the way through sport from the ground up. At Luca we endeavour to find 'the solution for school sport' which is only fair to the next generation. In Nick's words: 'What is the technology that's accessible?' 'What tools can we put into the hands of: school masters, headmistresses, the volunteers at local rugby clubs?' 'Let's build tech that people can afford to use.' At Luca, we are doing all that and more. If you are a Director of Sport, Sport's Coach, Headteacher, School Bursar or anyone else who wants to know more about what we do, then don't hesitate to contact us. ✍ Thanks to Sam for the event and we look forward to being continuously involved in plenty more in the future, shaping the future of concussion management. 🧠

Loved being a part of the brilliant 'Ahead of the Game' event hosted by Sam Peters at St Paul's School last week. If you want to learn more about what we're doing at Luca Health to support schools and to protect pupils from the effects of head injuries, check out the video below. Great to share the stage with Alison Kervin OBE, Sam Smith, Tom Kohler-Cadmore & David Bartlett. I was super encouraged by how many people care deeply about the future of school sport. Sport is so incredibly formative. It develops shy children into leaders, winning and losing together sets you up brilliantly for the real world, and genuine life long bonds are formed. We just need to make it safer, so these benefits are fully reaped by the current and future generations of youngsters.

We still have a handful of tickets left for this evening - kickoff is 6:30pm at St Paul's School in Barnes, west London. Some of the brightest minds from the medical world will be outlining the head injury problem in sport and then I, alongside some fellow entrepreneurs, and pro athletes, will be sharing what we can do about it and how we can grow sports like rugby that are currently struggling for relevance. Message me if you'd like to come and I'll ping you a complimentary ticket 🙂 Mike Loosemore, Bill Ribbans, Dr Lisa Ryan (RNutr), Sam Peters, Alison Kervin OBE, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, David Bartlett, Sam Smith, Cath Bishop, Neil Rollings

My nickname when I played for Northampton Saints was Bamm-Bamm, of Flintstones fame. I ran around like a headless chicken, annoyed the hell out of the senior players for going too hard and generally had complete disregard for my body. My time in pro rugby didn't last long, just a couple of seasons, because of numerous injuries caused by bulking up too quickly. For a long time, I was resentful of my experience and how I was treated. With everything we now know about concussion and the cumulative effects of repetitive head knocks, I now count myself fortunate and that I potentially dodged a bit of a bullet. I would absolutely have been a prime candidate had my career lasted longer, and who knows, I might well still be affected. I've been incredibly saddened to follow the stories of Stephen Thompson MBE & Alix Popham, to name just two. There are hundreds. They had no idea what they were being exposed to, and nor did I. I have tremendous sympathy for all affected and can't imagine what a diagnosis of early onset dementia in your early 40s must feel like. Alix has turned his devastating diagnosis into a force for good through the charity he founded with his wife Melanie Bramwell-Popham & @sally tucker, Head For Change. The Charity does sterling work to support former pro rugby players and footballers who are living with the reality of a neurodegenerative disease. There's still so much we don't know and that's why we need to raise money to fund much needed research. So there we are, I'm running the Boston marathon in April. 26.1 miles through a city that's the global leader for brain health research and I'd be incredibly grateful for anything that you might be able to give to support this wonderful charity. Donating £2.61 is less than the cost of a cup of coffee, but if you have the means, £26.1 would be incredible to help support those affected, and to help us find a way to make sport safer, for all. Fundraising page (full story) in the comments. Thank you so much! P.S. Thought I'd post a photo of Bamm-Bamm 🤦♂️.

Great to be back at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) running an entrepreneurship workshop with year 12s from Alleyn's School. Awesome to share what we're doing at Luca Health to empower schools to deliver their sports programmes with confidence in this high scrutiny head injury environment they now all operate in. It's amazing how interested kids are in startups. Social media gets a lot of flack, often justifiably, but thanks to it, and other mediums like podcasts and audiobooks, means they're already exposed to so much and know exactly what to ask! Highlight of the session was being told that concussion is 'washed' 🤷♂️ My apparently vacant look was quickly followed by an explanation that 'washed' means rubbish or bad. So there you go millennial linkedIn, you're welcome, a new word to help keep you young and hip on this sunny Wednesday 😎 Big thanks to Kate Goff, Alice Eddie and the rest of the LSE Generate team!
