About us

In April 1948 the British Ceramic Research Association was created by the fusion of the British Refractories Research Association, which had been in existence since 1920 and the British Pottery Research Association, which was founded in 1937. The organisation continued to use the site in Queens Road, Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent which had been the home of the British Pottery Research Association since 1938. The Queens Road site, which was officially opened in December 1951 by H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, remains the company headquarters to the present day. In May 1986 the company name changed to British Ceramic Research Ltd and began using the trading name CERAM Research Ltd, although the company was widely known simply as 'CERAM'. In December 2006 CERAM acquired The M&P labs, a leading testing and materials analysis company in the USA with sites in Schenectady, NY and Greenville, SC. On the 1st February 2014 the company rebranded as Lucideon, bringing all the businesses under one company name. In addition to laboratories in NY and SC, we now have a site in Raleigh, NC, and accredited laboratories in the Far East. Our expertise extends to ceramics, metals, polymers and composites across industries as diverse as Healthcare, Aerospace, Nuclear, Energy and Construction.

Congratulations to Rob Broad, who this year celebrates 15 years service at Lucideon!  “I had been in accountancy roles in other companies and had just completed an assignment in Poland at a new Financial Shared Service Centre (FSSC). I was introduced to Lucideon by an HR Director who I had worked with before, but who had joined Lucideon. I met Tony Kinsella a couple of times before joining and the rest is history as they say.”      Rob joined the Finance team initially, before becoming Group Financial Controller within a few months. That role expanded as the company grew and developed new financial controls and revenue streams. Four years ago, Rob accepted a new challenge in Group Administration, moving from Finance and into Operations.      “I still spend a lot of time creating spreadsheets and analysing figures, but I am now embedded in the delivery operations of the group - this has given me much more focus on how we support clients in the most effective way.”    One of Rob’s most significant achievements came recently during our relocation from Stoke to Stone Business Park – beginning with him hand-delivering the newly signed site documents to lawyers in Liverpool early one winter morning.  “The complex process of developing the site has delivered an exceptional lab environment with office and meeting spaces. The new site is excellent for our operations and I am very proud of how we went from quite a blank canvas to a modern and competitive science facility.”

Commonly used sweeteners Xylitol and Erythritol are currently undergoing scrutiny due to potential health-related concerns among consumers. Although studies into the health effects of these sugar alcohols are incomplete, it may become necessary for manufacturers to look to find appropriate substitute ingredients for their products whilst minimising impact on subjective consumer response.
