Leaders and representatives from Y-PERN's smaller and specialist higher education institutions met at Leeds Conservatoire last month. Participants from Leeds Arts University, Leeds Conservatoire, Leeds Trinity University, and York St. John University discussed how Y-PERN can best support them to build capacity, resources, and activities that provide value to them and the wider Y-PERN network while enhancing their unique role and contribution. Participants highlighted that the extensive expertise of smaller and specialist HEIs is not always research focused. This expertise is however deeply valued by policy partners and can inform evidence-based policymaking as impactfully as more traditional research policy collaboration and knowledge mobilisation. For example, Leeds Conservatoire has invested considerable time in curating and maintaining practitioner-based networks such as the West Yorkshire Music Network. A short report for publication will be produced from the workshop. Y-PERN will report findings back to relevant stakeholders with recommendations for future policy engagement collaborations with smaller and specialist HEIs. ⬇️ Find out more on the Y-PERN website: https://lnkd.in/eCHBBWwk 📷 Y-PERN workshop at Leeds Conservatoire. • Great to see Freya Thomas Monk of Pearson UK & International Schools writing in FE Week on the importance of reforming the post-16 GCSE English and maths landscape. We're delighted to be supporting Pearson's #ResitRethink work. Too often, students in further education colleges that resit their English and maths GCSE get caught in a 'cycle of resit failure and exam fatigue'. Immediate changes, such as reducing the assessment burden in maths or streamlining the content in English, could alleviate significant pressure on these students. In the long-term, however, it's clear we need dedicated GCSE qualifications that better cater for post-16 learners on vocational courses. #ResitRethink https://lnkd.in/eq3ZcC23

  • We're delighted to be supporting Pearson UK & International Schools' #ResitRethink efforts, seeking to reform the qualifications post-16 learners are required to resit if they have not secured a grade 4 in GCSE English or maths during their time in secondary school. All too often, students in further education colleges who are impacted by GCSE English and maths resit requirements end up caught in 'a cycle of resit failure and exam fatigue'. Implementing a more appropriate and accessible set of qualifications for these learners would lead to better overall outcomes for students. Colin Booth, CEO of Luminate Education Group, said: “Recognition that the post-16 GCSE English and maths resit system needs urgent reform is welcome and Luminate Education Group has been pleased to support Pearson’s exploration so far around the shape reform could and should take. "Taking a long term view, it’s clear that the creation of dedicated English and maths GCSE qualifications, that are specifically designed for and only available to post-16 students studying vocational qualifications, is long overdue. "Appreciating this reform takes time however, we are supportive of immediate changes that will better cater for the needs of post-16 learners that resit these qualifications. Whether it be reducing the assessment burden in maths or streamlining the content in English, immediate opportunities to heighten the relevance and accessibility of existing qualifications should be pursued. "It's vital we escape the ‘cycle of resit failure and fatigue’ which, as Pearson acknowledge, post-16 English and maths resit students experience all too often. Provided visions around long-term reform are realised, Pearson’s ‘Resit Rethink’ exercise could be a promising way to achieve this.” Through the link below, post-16 leaders, sector experts, educators and learners can join the #ResitRethink, to have their say on what reform could and should look like.

The #ResitRethink focuses on freeing thousands of post-16 learners from a cycle of GCSE resit failure and fatigue. Our recommended short, medium, and long-term solutions for post-16 English and maths can start making a difference from day one, whilst building towards the greater reform we know is needed. • Showcasing the Future of Healthcare Education: T Levels in Action!   On Thursday, 6th March, Leeds City College hosted an inspiring full-day event at Quarry Hill, bringing together colleagues from across the Yorkshire and Humber region to explore T Levels in Health.   Organised by the Education and Training Foundation, the event featured a range of engaging sessions, from hands-on clinical skills demonstrations to insightful curriculum discussions led by educational charity, NCFE.   Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from NHS employers, participate in career-focused sessions with @Allied Health Professionals, and see firsthand our state-of-the-art clinical suite in action when Leeds Teaching Hospitals demonstrated best practices in patient care.   With invaluable contributions from awarding bodies, Sim & Skills, and industry professionals, the day reinforced the critical role of T Levels in preparing learners for the healthcare sector - bridging the gap between education and real-world practice.   A huge thank you to everyone who took part in making this event a success. Fantastic to see our Public Service students getting out in nature and learning new skills. #OutdoorLearning

    View profile for Mark H

    Program Manager at Keighley College

What a stunning spring day! 🌞 Once the mist in the Aire Valley had finally cleared, it turned into one for the books. Keighley College’s Public Service students were out there, putting their learning to the test, cooking up a storm with trangia stoves on the hill. 🌄🔥 All part of their prep for an epic wild camping expedition near Gaping Ghyll in the Yorkshire Dales. 🏕️ Today, they got up close and personal with packs—next time, we’ll be carrying a bit more and yes, we’re taking the tents! 🏞️ These kids are absolutely mad for it!! They've trekked hundreds of miles, and while the distances may be shorter now, the journey to mastering new skills is anything but. 💪✨ #PublicService #OutdoorLearning #KeighleyCollege #SpringAdventures #WildCamping #SkillsInTheMaking
