We’ve recently updated our interactive map of lung cancer screening to include the latest studies from China, Aotearoa New Zealand and the US, highlighting their ongoing work to build evidence and continue to implement screening programmes. The interactive map captures and collates global implementation research on low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening for lung cancer, allowing users to explore clinical trials, implementation studies and organised programmes. It also provides the policy context around lung cancer and LDCT screening in each country. Discover the interactive map below and get in touch to submit further data: https://lnkd.in/e4EUmsCC
About us
The Lung Cancer Policy Network is a global alliance of multidisciplinary stakeholders that have come together to help make lung cancer an international policy priority. The Lung Cancer Policy Network was established in 2021 as an initiative of the Lung Ambition Alliance. It is a global network of multidisciplinary experts from across the lung cancer community, which includes clinicians, researchers, patient organisations and industry partners. The Network aims to improve lung cancer survival worldwide. We do this by engaging policymakers – sharing research, reports and recommendations that highlight opportunities to diagnose and treat lung cancer earlier. We hope to make lung cancer an international policy priority, and by doing so, improve quality of life for people diagnosed with lung cancer and to reduce the number of deaths caused by the condition. The Lung Cancer Policy Network is a global multi-stakeholder initiative set up by the Lung Ambition Alliance. The Network is funded by AstraZeneca, Guardant Health, Johnson & Johnson, MSD and Siemens Healthineers. Secretariat is provided by The Health Policy Partnership, an independent health research and policy consultancy. All Network outputs are non-promotional, evidence based and shaped by the members, who provide their time for free.

Last month, we joined the Asia Pacific Coalition against Lung Cancer (APCLC) for a webinar that explored the status of screening activity in Asia-Pacific, and looked at common challenges and key lessons. If you missed it, the recording is now available on our website! Featuring screening and health system leaders from across the region, the webinar saw experts from Australia, India, Singapore and South Korea outline the status of screening in their countries, while sharing challenges they have experienced and lessons learnt along the way. Eleanor Wheeler from the Network Secretariat also provided an overview of the Network’s implementation framework, which has been designed as a tool to support people setting up screening programmes. The webinar laid the foundation for an in-person workshop that took place at the Asia Conference on Lung Cancer on 17 October 2024. · Discover the Network’s lung cancer screening implementation framework here: https://lnkd.in/eiShXefR · Watch the webinar recording and read key takeaways here: https://lnkd.in/eSG7ppf7

Last month, we were honoured to participate in several conferences and events including the World Conference on Lung Cancer, European Society of Medical Oncology and World Cancer Congress. In our latest blog post, we detail what we’ve been up to, what we’ve learnt and other highlights from this busy conference season. We’ve had a fantastic time meeting so many people from the lung cancer community and learning more about the advancements taking place. We also met with delegates who work across different types of cancer, which provided an opportunity to share expertise and identify common goals. Join us in November, which is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, for a webinar examining opportunities to improve early-detection strategies for lung cancer across different settings. We will be joined by a global panel of experts who will share their unique insights into implementing screening strategies across different health systems and national contexts, as well as how they overcame the challenges encountered along the way. While the evidence is clear that detecting lung cancer earlier can greatly improve patient outcomes, huge barriers still stand in the way of implementing comprehensive plans to achieve this. Building on our report published last year, ‘Increasing the earlier detection of lung cancer: a toolbox for change’, the webinar will consider the actions needed to support health system leaders and decision-makers in establishing effective early-detection strategies. We will also examine the steps that can be taken to ensure strategies are optimised to the unique circumstances of each regional context. In 2020, Croatia became the first country in the European Union to establish a national lung cancer screening programme. Since then, Poland, Hungary and Czechia have followed, with screening initiatives currently at various stages of implementation. In our latest case study, we examine the progress made in implementing screening programmes in Central and Eastern Europe, set against the unique position of the region’s health systems. Currently, 50% of lung cancer cases in the region are diagnosed at a late stage. But existing infrastructure and commitments from the European Union could support a shift towards earlier detection as more countries work to roll out targeted screening programmes. We were delighted to co-host a workshop at this year’s Asia Conference on Lung Cancer in partnership with Asia Pacific Coalition against Lung Cancer. The workshop brought together over 40 delegates to discuss the shared regional priorities, challenges and opportunities for implementing lung cancer screening programmes. Our initial takeaways from the event are that a common multidisciplinary voice is needed to advance screening commitments. Secondly, that a step-wise approach to expanding screening activity and availability could be pragmatic across the region. The diverse health systems and populations that make up Asia Pacific require thoughtful planning of screening programmes. Several locations, such as Taiwan, South Korea and Australia, are leading the way, providing a way forward for others to secure policy commitments and optimise their own programmes. Look out for our full reflections and next steps in the coming weeks. Thank you to the APCLC Chair and Network Steering Committee member Herbert Loong, MBBS FRCP FASCO for leading the workshop, and to the delegates who participated. We look forward to strengthening our work with you in future.

More good news about the Screening of Lung Cancer in Europe (SOLACE) initiative, this time from Germany which has taken a major step forward in introducing a national lung cancer screening programme. It now joins a list of countries moving towards the introduction of low-dose CT (LDCT) lung screening programmes which include the USA, Canada, Australia, China, South Korea, Croatia, Poland and the Czech Republic. In an interview with the AuntMinnieEurope.com website, Professor Marie-Pierre Revel from the SOLACE project, said: 'Another European country moving towards implementation is a very good sign.' Lung cancer screening has the potential to diagnose the disease at an earlier point, improving treatment options and survival rates. In 2019, Germany had over 63,000 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed in the year and around 53,900 deaths from the disease, according to the International Respiratory Coalition’s Lung Facts. The Screening of Lung Cancer in Europe (SOLACE) initiative is a pioneering new #EU4Health project under the Europe’s #BeatingCancerPlan. It will facilitate the provision of lung cancer screening programmes by breaking down the barriers to accessing them. #SOLACE #SOLACELUNG #HealthUnion #EUCancerPlan #EU4Health #screening #lungcancer #cancerscreening #lungcancerscreening #beatingcancer #LungCancerEurope #LuCE #LCSM #EuropeanLungFoundation #ELF
